Turkey Questions....What are you having for Christmas dinner

posted 24th Dec
So I thawed out a 20 pound turkey. It's suppose to be ready tomorrow....

Was wondering, if I pop it in the oven tonight, what temperature should I put it on? How long will it cook for until it's done?

Uncovered? Covered? I'm not going to stuff it or anything...

Also, what are you guys having for Christmas dinner? I need some ideas.

Thanks

Have you ever cooked a turkey before? If not I'd slather it with butter and put it in a roasting bag. 20 mins per pound I do believe. It's idiot proof.

We're having pinapple/brown sugar glazed ham mmmmmm

We are having duck. It is just my husband and me. He wanted a goose, but those are expensive around here. Guess that economic principle about demand/supply determining price that was drilled in during 10th grade is true with Christmas geese.

For turkey, I've always heard 325 F, 20 minutes/pound... 400 minutes... so a little over 6.5 hours... until the turkey is 160 F.

I just cover mine in butter and salt, then put tin foil over the pan. Take the tin foil off for the last (hour I believe?) And continue to baste a ton during that time. I learned how to make it from this video and it came out perfect and juicy (it's for a small breast, but works fine for a whole turkey as well:

ETA: we're having ham though, and I don't have to cook it this year! thank goodness. Also, the temperature/time varies by size.

Yea, I baked one before, just not a 20 pound one
Just trying to see how everyone else does one, cause if I jack this up, it's 20 pounds of smurfed up, and that's all kinds of bad,lol

Ooh that ham sounds good. We've done a brown sugar/rum/cinnamon glaze for ours....

Thank you for the video! That's how I've done a small turkey in the past, with just butter and salt/pepper. Well now I'm not so nervous about cooking this....thank you so much

Mix the green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and french fried onions with a little bit of pepper altogether, Than I just put it in a pan with extra french fried onions on top pretty simple and tastes great!

Oh you'll be fine then. I use roaster bags for all of my big items, though. For Thanksgiving I stuffed balls of butter underneath the skin of the Turkey and made a rub with olive oil and garlic and stuffed large stalks of fresh rosemary, parsley, dill and basil in the bag with it. OMG it was soooooooooo good.

I have some rum somewhere I think that sounds good for ham!

Wow! That does sound good. We've stuffed balls of butter under the skin on our last one too, and it turned out pretty good, but I've never made a rub with it. I only have parsley though   but I'm running to the store today so I might as well pick up some dill, basil and rosemary to go with it. And yea...rum is good for everything, lol

My mom always does a honey glazed ham on Christmas Eve (leftovers for breakfast!) with homemade biscuits and a prime rib for Christmas dinner. We love turkey but get our fill at Thanksgiving!
