Tipping

posted 4th Jun
Why do people feel they can go out to eat, and not tip? Or just leave a few dollars? The average tip is 18-20%. So, the more you spend, the more they do for you. Meaning, more tip. Servers/Bartenders only make tips.

So, if you want to go out to eat, and be waited on. Tip accordingly. Bad service, thats another story. I am not talking about bad service.

I just wanted to get other peoples thoughts on this....

I am known at Perkins for my HUGE tips. The servers will fight over me. So now that they know me I get excellent service.

As a fomer server and prob future server I agree!!! It drive me nuts!!! although I have to say I am not as rude as some of the people I have worked with I have known people that will chase people out into the parking lot to gripe about their tip!!
What I hate is the ones that THINK they have tipped you so well, and they brag about it, then you see your tip and you have to fake it and say Oh thank you so much!! While the whole time your bitting your lip over their lousy 10%!!! Although I have to say, I think a lot of it is that people dont' know any better and MATH skills are horrible too!!!

Is that the average tip? I thought it was between 10-15%.. 10 being the bare minimum for mediocre service.. If I get service that was awesome, I mean above and beyond, or if my kids were royal hellions and left a nice mess then I go up to %20 but my median is %15 if they did everything they were supposed to..

I can sympathize to a *degree* with servers but as a chef who never gets tipped I'm kinda bitter..

Haha, we have a few we like to get. BUT we alll remember the none or bad tippers, most run up front and beg not to get them. I would never in my life do something b/c of a bad tip, but I have seen things.....

I generally tip more than 15% for average service and more than 20% for really good service in a restaurant. Being a server is tough work and bad food is never the fault of the server. But it truly makes me nuts when you pay in cash and you get change in larger bills. For example....we went out the other night with a group. The bill was $160. We wanted to leave a $30 tip. The dumb waiter gave us two 20 dollar bills in change. I feel like they do this to try and scam a bigger tip. I was tempted to leave only a $20 tip. Anyway...somebody happened to have a 10 so we did leave 30. But in that situation I would usually leave a smaller tip because I think the waiter is being a scammer.

Well, here the tip is 15% and I always tip that amount, sometimes more if the service and food were extraordinary. But if I get bad service, I'm not tipping. And that does happen. I have gone out and gotten a rude waiter who got everything wrong and had attitude when they had to take something back and correct it. That doesn;t deserve a tip in my mind. My thing is...waiters make most of thier money in tips, so they should give good service. If the service is bad, they didn't do thier job properly and therefore do not deserve a tip.

this really burns me.
i was a server and prolly will be one agian, and the people that leave you the shitty tips are normally the ones that run you like a dog

i always tip 5+ dollars no matter what the bill, because i know what its like to need to make so much money a night in tips and not making it becasue some ass holes tip you a dollar

i tip good if i feel necessary. i will never leave less than a $5 but usually $7-10 depending on the restuarant and how much we spent. it's usually just me and the bf, so dinner is usually about $20-$30.

Haha I have had that happen. They say you are soo awesome, I left you a little extra, then it is a sucky tip. Atleast they were nice though. I hate rude people, then they tip crappy.

I have seen people chase them down before, I could never!

Nope!!! Standard is at least 15%!! But really a decent tip should start at 17%. Usually anywhere from 15% to 25%!

A good rule is to double the tax, that makes it 16.5%, BUT not if you drinking alcohol, it doesn't get the tax added!!! For drinks, depending on the night or time of day a good rule is about $1 to $1.50 a drink, if your buying individual drinks, if not then again at least 15%

Yes, bad service should be punished.

My minimum tip is usually a 5 for 2 people or under. I don't spend a lot of money or go out often, so when I actually do go out to eat I throw down a wad. LOL! But that's because where I live people live off minimum wage and really struggle. And some of my friends are servers and they are barely scraping by. I have the money, I dont use it, they were decent so why not leave a little extra if they were nice?

I feel bad if I don't tip or tip enough, even if the service sucks. But I will tell them the service sucked and still leave 10%. My friends roll their eyes at me for that, but if you were on the job and you were paid 8 bucks hourly and you botched up one thing, chances are your boss isnt going to cut yu to 3 an hour. I see it that way.

Some people just suck at serving and I'm afraid they'd starve if I didnt leave a little something.
