Childbirth classes *D & D*
posted 23rd Dec
My So & I had agreed almost immediately when we found out that I'm pregnant that we wouldn't take any of the prenatal classes since he had been through them before & he would be able to help me with any questions that I had regarding everything. I thought that would be a good idea since it was so recent that he did that I'd be fine without it.
Now, I'm having second thoughts.
I'm starting to freak out about labor, breast-feeding, etc & I kind of want to take as many as I possibly can.
My question is: what do you think? Should a woman take prenatal classes to prepare or can she get by on her own?

I didn't, and i wish i'd at least taken like a relaxation or Lamaze class. It would have helped me a lot.

i didn't. my labors were smooth.

Well, the first time i went into labor was at 23 weeks with my first. Even if i had wanted to take the birthing classes, I was on my own. IMO, labor is pretty self explanatory. I think most people take them as part of the experience of being a new parent, not necessarily how to do the whole labor thing.

I had a birthing class with my first...didn't help. I do think that a parenting and breast feeding class could be helpful.

I've never taken any of those types of classes, but I see how they can be very helpful.

I took several and absolutely nothing they teach you matters once youre in labor.

We didn't take any classes and I had no trouble giving birth naturally to all of my children. I had a lactation consultant come to my room after I gave birth to make sure everything was fine with my first, and that was about it. All was well. If you feel the need to take the class, do it.

Sometimes they are helpful with things that you don't know, other times they are just reassuring. I wouldn't rely on SO. Not because he wouldn't care or remember, but he has a slightly different focus than you in childbirth/pregnancy (: I think you would probably feel more confident also if you didn't rely on him for his experience... the classes I took were free. I knew most of the stuff already, as I'm sure most moms (if you lurk BG lol) do, but it does give you the opportunity to ask questions ESPECIALLY if the courses are given at your local hospital where you plan to deliver. Couldn't hurt to take them and if you had one and didn't want to go back... you just wouldn't.

I took lamaze! It was soooo very worth it!

I took them but I didn't find them to be any help really. Just the breastfeeding class, but a lot of it really does come naturally as instincts. Idk why they think women are stupid when it comes to babies when there wasn't any classes hundreds of years ago and they still managed.

I took them but only because they included education on pain relief, PPD, and support on how to care for a newborn

Yes but hundreds of years ago child birth and rearing was a group effort, your entire tribe, clan, settlement would be involved. Times are different now
