Advice needed please!! Still has fever!

posted 23rd Dec
Backstory: my 12 month old got his first MMR and varicella shot thursday morning... That night around midnight he woke up crying and was sweating and so hot- his temp was 103.8 and he started puking. We took him to the ER and they gave him tylenol.ibuprofen and checked for the flu which was negative. They said he had an upper respiratory infection but the fever and throwing up were side effects from the vaccine!

Friday morning when he woke up he still had a temp and continued to have it all day long even though i gave him ibuprofen. It was always around 102. That night after his last dose before bed it went down to 100.

Saturday: He woke up once again with a 102.6 fever. Gave him ibuprofen and called the doctor- spoke to a nurse and she said to just keep giving him the ibuprofen and if the doctor wanted me to do any thing else, she would call back. She didnt call back. I checked his temp around 1pm and it was normal and he acted better all yesterday.

Sunday (Today): He felt warm when he woke uo, I took his temp- it was 102.6!!! He is cranky and has a runny nose. Thats all i see. He is eating fine. I gave him ibuprofen again. '

I tried calling the doctor and they NEVER answer their after hours line! What should I do?? Keep giving him the ibuprofen? This has been ongoing for 3 days now. When would a fever be a concern?

I would just go into an after hours or urgent care. I have seen fevers last that long but he still should be seen

Its normall around 99 (rectally).

Other than the fever, he is cranky and has a runny nose!

have you been taking his temperture the rectally? I was just thinking that maybe its a low grade fever if his normal body temp is high to begin with. But i think i would still bring him back to the ER at least to see if they can get it to lower back down to 100 or even lower

Yes I always take it rectally. I just dont know what is considered "bad" when it comes to a fever.. like how long it should last and when i should be worried!

Is the 102.6 fever taken rectally? If so you always subtract a degree making it 101.6. I'd go back to the doctor or ER.

That's tough- because 102.6 is not that high, I personally would give Tylenol and keep it down and wait to see the doctor in the morning. But if gets unresponsive I would go to ER. But you are the mom if you feel something is not right go in.

Well it sounds like it hasn't really broken. So to have a fever for 3 days to me seems pretty bad. But i also over react alot. I would just bring him into the ER or maybe call the Ask A Nurse line and find out what you should do. THey probably will tell you to bring him in

You dont subtract when you take it rectally. Rectally is the most accurate temp you can get

I have known a few children, including my son when he was 12 months old that has had week long fevers. My son's fever got up to 105 (it was 103 at our house though) when we took him to the e.r. They double dosed him and ran a bunch of tests. It turned out to just be a virus that lasted a week though. My son was lethargic though, so we stayed until he started acting cranky and sick....which was a good sign since we had went in with him red all over and barely moving or even crying. We did have to force fluids down with a medicine dropper because he wouldnt take in any though.
I would say if he is just being cranky and normal (normal for a little guy that doesnt feel well), that is a good sign, especially since his fever has went down and hasnt been constant. If he starts to not act him self or his fever keeps rising, I would take him in right away though.

in and its 100.5 which is right over the "fever" level.. I'm going to see how he does today since he is eating/drinking fine and then make an app in the morning if he still has the fever.

Thanks guys!
