Tried EVERYTHING, time for urgent care?

posted 22nd Dec
my son is 11mo (8mo adjusted) and he has chronic constipation. We have tried literally everything short of castor oil to get him to go. We have tried fruit juices, karo syrup, laxative drops, suppositories, fiber, and probiotics. NOTHING is working!! The only thing that did was the suuppositories and it has been almost a week since his last movement so my husband just called me at work to tell me he gave him one and nothing happened when usually there is an instant response after this many days. And his pediatrician is USELESS, we have told him every month for at least 4 months now that LO's constipation hasn't improved, if anything it has gotten worse   . Should I take him to urgent care to be checked out? he isn't fussy and no fever but his tummy is rock hard.   poor babe.

If he's not in pain I'd let it go. But maybe he needs a daily fiber substitute. Idk how young u can do that but if u wanted to take him to urgent care to get opinions on that I would.

We have been giving him fiber. we started at an 1/4 of a teaspoon 2x a day and that did nothing so now we are doing 1/2 teaspoon 2x a day and still nothing.

We used one on my daughter when she was 7m, it was for 2+ as well, just didn't use the whole bottle.. It took very little of it to work. And I would be switching Pedis. Maybe go to urgent care to see if they'll give him an enema?

Yeah, i think we will have to. With him being premature i'd rather be safe than sorry.

we had to with dd but she was 3. Maybe take him to urgent care and ask them if u can use one then. We used the pedialax brand. It worked fast but it made her cramp so bad   I felt awful. I cued as he was screaming in pain. But as soon as she got te poor out she felt 100x better and fell asleep.

We hate making him go because it is traumatic for him. They are super hard like dried clay and usually make him bleed. I can't stand it anymore, something has to give. Yup, to urgent care we go when i get out of work. thanks, ladies.

Not sure if you've brought him to urgent care yet or not. You said fruit juices, have you tried warm prune juice? DD was constipated all the time and this really helped, and once in a great while we had to do the thermometer up the bum like taking a temp and that helped.   Hope you figure it out

Yup, tried prune juice, prune apple juce, apple juice lol. Did take him and while we were waiting (over an hour) he went on his own and the consistancy was alot softer than it has been in months so i think the fiber is finally starting to do it's job  . So we are going to watch it and take him to the pedi when it is time for his next synagis shot and make issue of it then.

it's too bad your pedi isn't more interested in helping.
also, do you use formula? if so, do you use powder?
if you're using premie formula (like neosure), it's really concentrated, and a being just a tiny bit off on the mix can lead to substantial variation in the final product.

whichever formula you're on, it might pay to give them a call. similac, for example, has really knowledgeable consultants on the phone, they'll review with you what your approach is, and might have some recommendations.
either way, glad he's feeling better!

We use the powder Enfamil for babies born prematurely. It has added iron so that doesn't help with the constipation either but he has gone on his own again since going to urgent care so hopefully we have figured out the issue. thanks!
