Question About Child Recieving SSI

Ok, my son was diagnosed with autsim in October. He's 3. I was just curious as to what qualifies a child to be eligible to receive benefits? My nephew is 11, and has been getting SSI due to his juvenile bi polar disorder. Any info would be great. Thanks!

My son gets SSI for his autism. It is income based, but hubs makes great money and we still get a size able check each month. APPLY NOW. It takes awhile to get approved. But they also give your child Medicaid automatically to cover the pt ot speech si and behavior therapies

My sister has two children with Autism and it was easy to get SSI for them once they were officially diagnosed. I believe they were around 3 and 2 when they were diagnosed. Good Luck.

Theoretically I think you can apply online. However... I highly recommend going in to your local office to apply. It is faster response time . You will need a copy of all evaluations and diagnosis, and all income, last 4 check stubs, birth certificates, social security cards and IDs for everyone in the house.


As it can be overwhelming, I suggest you make a notebook to contain and organize all the evaluations, appointments and drs.

If you haven't gone through all that hassle yet, all you need is to fill out the form online. Have a list of all medical doctors who have treated your child, with addresses and phone numbers. They will do ALL the footwork. Then when you have your phone interview, they will send a packet with info they need- they will also tell you on the phone so you can gather the info while you wait for the packet. They will want wage stubs, rent/mortgage info. and bank accounts, SSI numbers of everyone in the house and that's basically it.
