re: Question for CA moms (regarding mat. leave)!

posted 21st Dec
Funny little article I found...

"It’s good to be a parent in California and Connecticut, which received grades of “A-“ for laws that give paid family leave and paid sick days laws respectively.

New Jersey and the District of Columbia got “B+” grades for giving workers access to paid sick leave and paid family leave respectively.

And Hawaii, Oregon and Washington received “B” grades for expanding the Family Medical Leave Act and other family-friendly policies.

Pretty much the rest of the country sucks donkey booty when it comes to helping moms support their families after they birth the babies. To see your state’s grade for job-protected maternity leave and other laws that help working moms, check out The National Partnership For Women & Families’ map here."

You can see where your state ranks. This is pretty cool.

Here it sucks... We get no pay unless its offered by our job. Mine offered none and I wasn't guaranteed 12wks fmla because they have less than 50 employees. My boss scoffed when asked for the day before my induction off.

That's HORRIBLE. Pack up and move to Cali. Lol. Here, it's quite customary to get at least 16 weeks off. I know a lot of people don't take that whole time because they can't afford to with the cut in your pay (SDI/EDD only pays 55-60% of what you make), but fortunately, I work for the State and am able to supplement my Vacation and Sick Leave to still get almost a full check while I'm off work. AND my mom (who also works for the state) can donate her vacation leave to me to use. It's not uncommon for a CA State employee to take off like 6-12 months when they have a baby. Your job is protected for a year and you can continue receiving pay as long as you've got the vacation leave built up. My coworker didn't go back to work till her son was 7 months old. My other coworker came back when he daughter was 11 months old.

I don't have enough leave (and my mom won't be able to donate that much) for me to do that, though. We haven't worked for the State long enough to have built up that much time. Some people earn 20 hours of Vacation each month. Lol. I wish.
