3 weeks and constipation

posted 21st Dec
Ever since I made the complete switch to formula ( similac neosure ) baby has been so constipated. He's only going like every 2 to 3 days, and when he does go he acts like it hurts a lot when he pushes it out. He is about 6 lbs, 5 oz now.... What could I do to help him?

Call your pediatrician and see what they want you to do.

My pediatrician told me to give DD pear juice 1/2 ounce with 1/2 ounce water when she was 4 weeks, when she got constipated and it had her going within an hour or two. The only way she stays regular now is with a glass or two of apple juice a day. The WIC ladies smurf their pants everytime they ask me, I sometimes tell them "well there are days where she will have 4 juice glasses." ... they will start rambling the reccommendations and I will say "but that is only when she is really backed up, other than that it is one or two a day." (DD is 3)

Did you like switch straight away or did you filter in the other formula

I would call the doctor to see if they can suggest a different formula, since he is a premie; it's normal to get constipated, the formula has quite a lot of added iron. Are you still able to pump any breast milk at all? It's a natural laxative and that might help him. Other than that, I don't know..hope he feels better.

neosure is LIQUID GOLD

that said... question. are you using ready to feed, or powder?
if powder, are you mixing one bottle at a time, or a pitcher at a time?

neosure is VERY rich. it's VERY easy to screw up mixing by a TINY little bit, and it changes the product enough to cause constipation
i was using ready to feed, then switched to powder, and both girls isntantly became constipated.
my advice is 1) mix a pitcher at a time, not a bottle at a time. that way, small errors won't be as dramatic
2) get a scale. you can pick up an electronic scale for super precise measurements, and use that instead of the scoop.

i gave my little one gerber pear juice because i didnt want to give him medicines.. it would always clear him right out! just gotta be careful with it cause they tend to poop, a lot. when i switched my son from neosure to regular he got SUPER constipated so i put him on sensitive, still the same. i switched to soy and he was perfect on it from 3 1/2 months til 1 year. no constipation again

My son is 3 weeks adjusted (16 weeks actual) and was on Neosure 24 cal recipe. He was constantly constipated and would grunt and push for hours and then scream every time a little bit would come out. I put my foot down and we switched him to the recipe on the can-one scoop of formula to 2 ounces of water (22 cal recipe) and it's helped alot. He's still gaining weight well so we are sticking with it.

I used to soak him in a warm bath, and yes it made one hell of a mess but I didn't mind because it helped him. While he was in the bath I would push one leg at a time so that his knee would touch his belly-alternating back and forth. It worked really well every time. He'd have an explosive poop and we'd be good for another day.

a warm bath and check his temp in his bottom. alot of times that will be enough to get things moving. also move there little legs up and down against there belly which will also help. if that doesnt help a little bit of juice wont be a problem just make sure they dont get dependent on one way of being able to go to the bathroom!

We tried everything with our little guy. apple juice, pear, prune, caro syrup, laxative drops, suppositories. Finally my mother told us to give him a little fiber supplement with his formula. We started mixing about a tablespoon of Benefiber in with his bottles twice a day and it helped him get regualr and softened his stool. We have been sticking with that routine and he is fine noe but he is also a bit older now too. He just turned a year old (9mo adjusted) and i would say we started the benefiber at around 7mo adjusted.
