I think it could be cute for a girl. Ellie is an adorable nickname.

There's a school in a neighboring town with that name. I had never heard the name before, so all I can think of when I hear this name is that school.

Eliana or Eleanor would work for Ellie as a nickname. -son names are boy names since they mean son of whatever. Except for Allison

Elliot is a boy name.

I like it as a boys name more than most last names brought to the first name slot. And Ellis is a nice NN.
As a girls name I don't like it at all.
