homemade ice cream/ice milk (no machine)

I found a very simple recipe today and am trying it right now..seriously easy:
4 cups milk
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
mix
freeze (stir every 2 hours)

I have seen many different recipes. many include heavy cream or sweetened condensed milk. but I didn't have those in stock, so I went with this one. but for future reference, can you give me your favorite ice cream recipes?   TIA

I use that basic recipe, but I put the ingredients in an old tin can with a lid.

Place that tin inside another tin. Surround the smaller can with ice. Lid on it. And roll it until it's ready. You need two people.  
ETA rock salt in the ice.

Same here except I do it with baggies. Ice and salt in the outter bag the rest in another bag Sealed inside of the outter bag. It's a bit messier than the cans cause the outside condensates. But you just shake it. Yummy.

  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk or half & half
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 6 tablespoons rock salt
  • 1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)
  • 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag
  • Ice cubes

How to make it:

  1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
  2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
  3. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
  4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
  5. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully.

This, but add rock salt to the ice.. makes it harden quiccckkk. You can also do it with plastic baggies and shake 'em   it's fun

I've done the shake ice cream where it's basically your recipe inside another bag with salt and ice in it, then shaken vigorously for forever until it becomes something similar to ice cream.

i remember doing something like this at camp when I was a kid   I didn't wash my can off very well tho and got a mouthful of rock salt lol

and I found a recipe that says make chocolate sauce, and drizzle over ice cream, let freeze and harden, and stir again. it breaks up the chocolate and turns it into chocolate chip ice cream   gonna try it, if I can stop eating the chocolate sauce...
