I fail to understand why this name is being used for females. It's so blatantly masculine and hideous for a poor little girl.....I hate this trend, can't wait for it to be over. And no...it is not unisex, not even a little - just because it is trendy for a girl does not change it's etymology.

In my opinion, I agree with you. But OP adores this name & has been in love with it for a very long time- so I don't really see changing her opinion when it's her baby and a name she adores.

i agree. i like the name (Em-uh-lyn) but not (Em-uh-line), but that is how it's correctly spelled.

Don't care - it's not appropriate for a girl and she needs to think of her daughter's future before her own personal sense of style.

well then Behindthename.com is incorrect. it's marked as Feminine & Masculine...which was odd to me because of the definition of Emerson.

Honestly? Not really. I have a ton of books that I've invested in, but in general, websites suck. As a general rule, if it says "masculine and feminine" - it's really just masculine. 99.9% of the "unisex" names floating around the internet are masculine names being shoved on girls. Hawaiian names, nature names and a select few Hebrew names are unisex, and that's about it.

Every culture has clear gender roles and that passes onto names. I don't think that moving the name from masculine to feminine really blurs those gender lines at all - it just gives little girls masculine names. If the trend went BOTH ways, it might be different, but as it stands, there are still very obvious double standards (girls can be masculine but god forbid boys be even a little feminine). It's also culturally insensitive and looks very uneducated.

Remeber when i asked for people to not be hateful!! I would rather my daughter have a somewhat masculine name than being rude and insensitive.. clearly the name doesnt define a person! I literally can not almost stand this site anymore people need to get off their high horses and find things better to do with their day then be rude to people!

How was what you quoted rude? I provided information - it's your own prerogative to let it get to you or effect you in any way.

I don't feel that it was that rude, I wouldn't get too offended by this site, worse smurf happens.

Not everyone was negative in this thread; don't focus on what you feel was rude if you're going to be upset, but the help people are trying to give you.
