depends on what your thoughts are.. how specific.

rule of thumb... the superstitious nurse in me... says the more detailed your birth plan is... the worse everything goes.

if your expectations are typical... no need. They'll ask about your preferences for pain management, how to feed etc when you're admitted.

no monitor? why not deliver at home then? if they can't monitor baby why bother going to the hospital? did the doctor approve that one? I dont' think I'd agree to take a labor if I couldn't monitor baby

no... you have a right to receive the safest care possible while in the hospital. If you want to "birth the way you want".. you have a right to do it at home without making the doctors and nurses liable.

I was told no by my OB.. But I wish I would have made one. That way I would not have given in so easily to their wishes, ie Pitocin immediately.. I just went with the flow and absolutely hated my birth

Lol that made absolutely no sense, they can still care for an "emergency" in a hospital versus at home..

healthcare professionals make decisions based on best practice... not your birth plan. Even if your birth plan said no pitocin... if you needed it, and the doctor felt you would end up a section if things didn't start progressing.. he'd still have suggested pitocin.

that's why I have issue with birth plans. I'm already the best nurse I can be. I'm not going to do antyhing differently just because there's a written birth plan. If my patient is in horrible pain.. I'm going to offer what I think will relieve her pain. If she's told me no pain meds... ok. But I dont' need it written to tel me... her saying it is enough.

Just out curiosity how was the natural birth for you? I have heard many horror stories and many successful ones as well. This is what I'm planning on and would love to hear your experience with it   TIA

how would they KNOW if it's an emergency if there's no monitor on baby? I absolutely would refuse to labor someone without a monitor. I don't want to rescucitate a newborn that comes out with a low heart rate.. no clue how long it's been that way... because of a selfish mom who doesnt' want a little belt around her stomach? insane

Ah yes because birth is such an inherent liability. Don't use unnecessary interventions that raise rates of complications astronomically and you won't have very much to be liable for.

That being said, I would rather give birth in a crack house than a hospital ;) Home birth FTW.

great... I'd rather you give birth at home then.

I dont' have issue with people who do home births. I have issue with people who want to birth in a hospital, and think they have a right to tell trained healthcare professionals how to do their jobs.... when they have limited googled information... and they aren't the ones who will be liable when something bad happens.

I was dilated to a five when I went into the hospital, no I did not NEED Pitocin the minute I walked in. My OB also said she wishes she would have done a cesarian because my baby was born not breathing, why you ask, because the baby was in distress from the Pitocin. A lot of Doctors do things on their time, not always what is BEST for the patient.. so that is a load of crap.

Needless to say, I am having a home birth this time.

How do monitors relay if a baby is breech or stuck.?
More women need to take control of their births and not get bullied into medical intervention, there is nothing wrong with going into it educated.

My birth plan give my doctor the go ahead to do what she believes is best. I would never tell her what to do. I just requested certain things as long as there was no medical reason to prevent them. I want her father present but I want to be the first to hold her. I asked for them to offer her father the chance to cut the cord. It states I prefer a natural birth but if the doctor feels I need a c-section than I am okay with it. I prefer certain things but in the end I give the final decision to my doctor.

This sort of thought process from a nurse is exactly the reason women have miserable experiences in hospitals. If I had a penny for every woman whom I have heard say they were treated horribly by a nurse while in labor I would be a millionaire. An intervention-filled, augmented and artificial birth should not be the only kind of birth available in hospitals. Women and babies are PEOPLE. They're not inanimate objects on your factory assembly line. You can't rush them to fit your schedule or think you have a right to make their decisions to suit your needs. There are many awesome nurses and obstetricians who are aware that birth isn't a disease or illness. It's still not the environment I would want to have a baby in but a lot of women do and it is terribly sad that you seem to have no respect or even awareness of a mother's RIGHT to make her own decisions. Even in a hospital setting.
