Threats Close Schools

posted 19th Dec
So my entire county's schools have been shut down for the remainder of the week to add to next weeks holiday vacation time due to an abundance of threats made to various schools scattered through out the county. I have heard both arguments that the schools "bent over" to unruly students, and that parents are happy the school is taking the threats seriously. Thoughts?

Here is the latest news article:

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -
(12/19/12) - Dozens of districts across mid-Michigan are canceling class for the rest of the week.
All Genesee County School districts will be closed, as well as many other schools throughout our viewing area. It's all tied to rumors of recent doomsday threats. And those threats are being taken very seriously following last week's school shooting in Connecticut.

"We don't have any immediate threats or dangers in school, we have a lot of, like you said, rumors, things the police are looking into, they're visiting students homes of rumors," Lisa Hagel, Superintendent with the Genesee Intermediate School District.
"The students are calling it a 'student revolt,' saying that because the world is going to end, they're going to bring weapons to school or something like that, they'll take care of people they didn't like anyway before the world ends," she said.

She say these rumors are spreading across Genesee County and even into the thumb. This, combined with the climate of fear circulating schools after last week's tragedy in Connecticut, means there's no way teachers can keep a normal learning environment this week.

"There isn't any intimate details, kids are able to provide, or intimate danger," Hagel said. "We just feel it's best to cancel school for the next two days."
The superintendent says, "Last week's shooting changed everybody and more so than ever, every threat must be taken seriously. With so many threats circulating right now, it's taking a lot of man power to investigate them all."

I'm glad they are taken seriously. I remember being in HS and being terrified of going on the week of Halloween and Valentine's Day, gangs tend to do a lot of harm during those times. I'm glad nothing ever happened to me but not everyone was as lucky.

I believe they should do a country wide shut down of schools. Personally. Because of all the threats especially around here in the West.

I re-posted this on Facebook. I live in Michigan and have been hearing news about the various threats. I wish they would close all schools. My son would not be going. I barely want my husband to go to work. I just want to shut us all in our house that day. :/

This week was a flurry of threats and pranks and all sorts of madness around here. A girl here in our school district made a hit list on FACEBOOK, a boy from another school district texted his mom saying "shooter in school, shots fired, hiding in closet" and his mom stirred up a bunch of other parents, and a set of boys from a completely different school district were caught making working "credible" bombs... the last obviously was taken most seriously and the authorities said these kids had this whole plan drawn up and most of it was dated far before last friday...

Wtf I haven't heard of that. What a bunch of crazies.

I think schools need metal detectors for students and like locked doors where only one has an entrance that leads right into an office if you need to get your kid or something.

People are nuts.

Quoting Kimberly, Momma to Levi=):" I re-posted this on Facebook. I live in Michigan and have been hearing news about the various threats. ... [snip!] ... My son would not be going. I barely want my husband to go to work. I just want to shut us all in our house that day. :/ "

I got this article from www.abc12.com
the top articles are "schools close due to threats" "millington kids being charged for actually making bombs" and "prank text about shooter in grand blanc sends parents in panic" UGH. What a scary time to be raising a school aged child!

Someone just posted on my facebook about some kid threatning a shooting at their school too & people are freaking out, on the chance it could be true. It looks like these copy cats are acting out nationwide. They need to crack down on these kids & punish them to the fullest, now is not the time to be joking around or being an attention whore.

There was a shooting near an elementary school's campus today in my city. No one was injured. Also, someone called in a bomb threat to the high school. I am afraid. I almost want to take off the rest of this week.

This actually makes me feel better about how they run my old high school. We had small classes, maybe 150 tops in each class. Our high school and middle school are connected. We had one too many bomb threats so they decided to bring in state trooper. At all times we had at least 4 state troopers walking around. Randomly they'd being in bomb/drug dogs. You could get in unless you had an appointment, ID, and we buzzed into 2 sets of doors, and if you break the glass it'd set off the alarm. And we're in the middle of no where.
