when two people decide that at some point in the future they will get married. My SO and I were laying in bed one night and he said 'suppose we better get engaged' and I said 'yeah ok' .... and that was it. A few months later my mum gave me her grandmothers engagement ring which is an heirloom, and that's been it for 8 years now.

It wasn't a legit proposal   Hence my smartass comment back to him.

To me, "engaged" means we agreed to get married and then he purchased the ring and proposed. In my family and my DH's family, they wouldn't see it as engaged of it were not done that way ( nor would we). My brother's getting married to a girl fromCambodia and I guess her family's idea of engagement is different. There's a whole seperate day where a ceremony takes place and the guy and his family brings various gifts to the girl and her family. It doesn't involve a ring and all that, as far as I know.
