Torticollis Update

posted 19th Dec
It's been a while since I've updated, but not much has changed up until now.

River Lyn is doing great! She is meeting all her goals and milestones we have set for her with her PT. Her tort is pretty much completely gone, even though she can still turn her head freakishly all the way to her left... but she is now also turning to her right and keeps her head looking straight. One shoulder still sits a little lower than the other, though.

She is crawling like a pro and is now pulling up to stand with the assistance of our sofa, and she can cruise while holding on to the edge. I still feel it may be a while before she walks on her own or even takes her first steps, though. She just seems too cautious to even want to try.

We FINALLY got in to see a neurosurgeon for her plagiocephaly. She wrote River a script and we went to see the prosthetic folks for her cranial molding helmet. They did an evaluation on her and said that at her age it may not help much, but it doesn't hurt to try. We've been trying to get her seen since 6 months. Finally at nearly 11 months she's going to get her helmet! She was approved by her insurance and will get fitted on the 31st!

Here are a few photos of her appointment the other day while getting the casting done. She was such a trooper, and made the practitioners laugh their asses off as she just sat there and "hummed" while they did the casting.

I am so happy. But to be honest I still would have been happy even if she was not approved. Her plagiocephaly is minimal compared to what I have seen in other babies, and I'm just blessed that she's healthy and such a happy girl. She has so much hair anyway, that whatever her helmet can't correct, her hair will cover it up.

And here are just a few more recent photos of my princess.

Merry Christmas!

You have a beautiful daughter. My son had torticollis too when he was born but not as severe. Congrats OP on her milestones!

I remember chatting with you before about torticollis. My youngest had it but a few months of physical therapy helped hers and you can't even tell it now. As far as your daughter, you can't even tell she has torticollis in those pictures. Such a beautiful baby girl.

she is beautiful. i don't know how bad her plagiocephaly is but my nephew and my son both had flatness on the back of their heads. my nephew's in particular was pretty bad...but he never wore a helmet and it completely went away.

It's not as bad as what I have seen in other babies. She has a huge flat spot on the left where her head would lay and then a bulge near the top right from shifting. Since she has so much hair you can't really see, until she takes a bath and it's matted down. Her ears are also off by a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch... one is more forward than the other. And she has a very unnoticeable lump on the left side of her forehead.

This is the only photo I have of the back of her head, and unless you're looking I'm guessing most wouldn't be able to tell... which is a great thing!

I'm just thinking ahead, I don't want to take the chance of her having confidence issues as she older when there could have been something I could have done to help fix it. But I'll be sure to teach her that she is beautiful and unique and her "flaws" give her character.

Yeah, her tort has improved so much and we've worked with her so hard.

And thank you.

It is so good to read this. Our daughter was diagnosed at 2 months. She is 9 mm off and we have to see a pedatric eye doctor due to intermint right eye esphoria. Her right is tight, so her flat spot is on the right and her ears are pushed forward-one side more so than the other. We are also working with PT, an ortho and her pcp. We have a ways to go...but reading your story is helpful! Thank you for sharing and your daughter is stunning!
