Songs being pulled due to shooting D&D

posted 19th Dec
So I've read already that two songs already have been pulled from some of the big radio stations around the United States due to the Sandy Hook shooting. The two songs are "Pumped up kicks" By Foster the People and "Die Young" By Ke$ha. I've been seeing a lot of back and forth on my facebook as well as other websites where people are agreeing and disagreeing with the songs being pulled.

Foster The People Story:

Ke$sha Story:

So how do you feel about this? Do you agree with the songs being pulled?

I disagree. I understand that the songs could be a little hard for the parents/family/friends to hear but it's just a song and both of them came out before the shooting. They have nothing to do with the shooting.
No, I don't think they need to be pulled.

Just like people freaked out when American Horror Story did the school shooting that was almost exactly like Columbine, it was a little close for comfort but they weren't hurting anyone.

These songs were recorded, then aired before the shooting happened. It's not like they were made specifically for this event. Just my opinion though.

I disagree, to an extent. Especially because I love pumped up kicks lol. But on a serious note, that is very debatable imo... I don't think taking two songs off air is going to make a difference in our messed up world. On the other hand I don't think songs about that kind of thing should ever be on air, or popping bottles, etc. But I don't think those specific songs are near the worst so I disagree.

Even if they were made beforehand, what do you think hearing that would do to a parent who lost their child in this horrible tragedy? Sure they could just not listen to the radio at all, but I think for now those songs are better off not being played.

Meh, I'm indifferent. I've only heard the Foster the People song, not the Kesha one.
I've read both the lyrics.
My thing is, the songs were not written about the shooting. They have nothing to do with the shooting.
Should they pulled? No. Should they not be played as much, probably for a bit.

Look at it this way, when someone is in an unfortunate spot, should they pull all songs about unfortunate situations...no. There would be no music anymore.

You can't just make every "bad" thing go away because they had to deal with a horrible thing.
It really sucks that this happened but they know that songs like this exist and that there are all kinds of shootings going on all around the country right now.
I understand the want to have everything that could remind them of friday to be removed but it's not going to change how much they are hurting right now.
Hell they probably aren't listening to the radio anyways.

Just saying... not to damper the sadness of the event or anything...

But children are being killed everyday. If we didnt play them because of them, we wouldnt play them because of any other child who was murdered...ya know?

and I don't think censoring the radio is going to do anything. :/ Maybe in CT, not not elsewhere.

At first I agreed but now thinking about it, people die everyday and there are so many songs that talk about death it's impossible to just stop them all. We shouldn't be controlling what other people write/sing, if someone doesn't want to listen they can change the station.

I agree with this, I just looked up the lyrics for pump up the kicks, and that sing is disturbing!

It's not censorship. From what I gathered from the article the radio stations were voluntarily pulling the songs:

By Saturday, the day after the shooting ... airplay dropped by 3 million listeners ... a sign that stations were slowly pulling the song off the air.

By Monday ... "Die Young" took a huge hit on the radio ... dropping down to 148 million listeners ... a 19 million drop from what had been a pretty steady rotation before the shooting.
