Bug out packs

posted 19th Dec
DH and I are going to start working on one in the next week or so. We dont have the money (until tax time) to really pack and prepare all we will need, so we're thinking just a small pack or two for now.

What are the BASIC necessities you keep in yours or would keep?

How much food? How much water? How much ammo, emergency supplies, etc etc etc.

I'm fairly certain that the general rule of thumb for bug out bags is 72 hours worth of rations and water per adult.

LOL... it's an emergency pack if you need to GTFO out of your house and leave to somewhere safer for a while, should some smurf go down (economic collapse, social collapse, etc)

Get a pack that is also inconspicuous. You want to be well prepared, but not look the part.

Smurf... how do you fit all that in there with everything else you'll need? I guess we need one for every member of the family...

that's a good question. I'm a fatass so I would want to bring all kinds of food. Plus if you have kids then that creates all kinds of other issues. I think most bug out bags have like MRE type freeze dried food in storage packs that are compressed and small. the water thing you can invest in a camel pak they hold a good bit!

See, I didnt even think about copies of birth certs and stuff like that! Thank you. Also wondering if instead of cash, if we should get some gold or silver. I dont know if cash will be still valuable in case of emergency. I've also heard tobacco is good for bartering.

Of course, DH says that we wont be close enough to other people to trade anything because we'll be by ourselves somewhere away from civilization. lol

Get some with a waist straps. Just not huge flashy ones that say "hey I have lots of supplies and am well prepared!"
Peanut butter and bread are the easiest things, IMO. Dried fruit like cranberries and raisins. Water purification stuff is easier to carry than actual water, but you need to know where to find a decent water source. Weapons are a necessity. Use what your comfortable and somewhat skilled with.
