Permanent marker plates question.
posted 19th Dec
So I made my Santa cookie plates with the permanent marker and I am just about to bake it. I started reading online that after a while it just washed right off a lot of people's plates. Ugh. So I am wondering if I should put a little tag that says hand wash like warm water only? I mean its for cookies only so it won't get overally dirty. Anyone experienced the marker coming off?

I've done coffee cups and if you bake it long enough it shouldn't come off

A lady told me to bake at 350 for 30 minutes because the 150 deg. Wasn't hot enough to make them stay.

I saw the 350 for 30 minutes is what they say but people were saying it came off after a bit. So I'm wondering if its not dishwasher safe? I don't know this is my first time doing it.

Sorry what did you bake it at?

Does it HAVE to be sharpie brand? We made like,8 plates with another permanent marker brand but I haven't baked them yet.

I'm not sure. I used sharpie brand but I don't see why it would have to be.

That's what I was thinking when I bought the markers and done the plates. But then, after I got to thinking it over in my head and was like, "smurf,I probably 'effed 'em up."

I don't see why the brand would make a difference. Hopefully they're ok.

I always tell people they need to hand washed and haven't ever had a problem.

I've been doing this and had no issue. I used a sharpie and ikea cup. Baked it for 40 mins at 400 degrees. Worked fine.

Okay,so I don't suggest you use anything but Sharpie brand. I baked 22 and they didn't stick so I cleaned them off with rubbing alcohol (I assume it wouldn't of came off if done right.) The other 6,I just washed with soap and water and it came RIGHT off.
FFS.

For a more "professional" finish, I bought the porcelaine pens at the art store. It was like $4.50 per pen. Well worth it. Not as many color choices, but turned out better than sharpie ( though sharpie is easier and more fun to use.) ;)

Ah,I don't want to fork out 4.50 per pen.
I went and bought the BIC mark-it markers. Should they work?
Granted the first time I did buy Dollar Store permanent markers.

Yea, it's pricey! As for the BIC ones... I don't know. I researched this project as much as I could and the only thing I took from it was that the sharpie oil-based( I think) markers work if you bake at a higher temp (400-450) and for a bit longer. It also helps to do the design then let it sit for 24 hrs, then bake. I'll see what I can find about the BICmarkers though.
ETA: seems the BIC markers should work too. This project is so hit or miss for people. Hopefully yours works out well!
