Both. But more of the parents to start it, then the school to help talk about it an be prepared for anything IMO.

With everything that just happened my kids 10 and 4 are well aware of it down to every last detail. But we watch the news every day as a whole family.

I think its very important for my kids to be aware of what goes on around the world as well as our country and community. Kwim?

So maybe I guess I think its more on the parents then anything else. LOL I changed my opinion the more I thought about it. Lol

I talked to my kids about it myself. The schools did send out an email about it saying they would go over emergency procedures again.

I try not to have the news on when the kids are home. I mean Ill watch the news, but not the on going coverage of whats happened. Kids dont need to know every detail in what happened. They dont need to know that a man shot at 6 and 7 year olds and put at least 3 bullets in them.

Last night my 9 year old asked me why so many kids were killed. I told him because the man had a lot of problems. My 7 year old kinda got scared and asked what if he came to his school and shot his friends. We went ahead and talked a little more, but I just had to reassure them that they are safe.

Colleen Im so sorry that Ash is taking it hard. I think kids are just like us parents and see things as "That could have been us". I hope shes ok. <3

We do "Lockdown" Drills here. We've had four this year so far. They are mandatory in Indiana - all schools do them. I would definitely be concerned if there were none. Although, parents hate that we do them here.

I love that the schools here do the drills that they do. Its mandatory to do each drill at least once a year, but I like that they do them more often. The chances of something happening while the kids are in school is low, its nice to know they will know what to do if it does

I get alot of comments about it unnecessarily scaring the kids. I always just reassure the kiddos that this is just like a fire drill - we are only practicing.

My kids have never seemed "scared" from them and I definitely think they are a good thing!

My daughter saw me crying and asked why.. I told her why. I wouldn't want anyone else telling her. If someone else had been crying about it other than her papa I would want them to just let me talk to her.

I think at first it should be the parents responsibilty and then it should be the schools responsibity to follow up with discusion if the children bring it up and follow through with whatever is necesssary to help them through it. i believe parents and teachers need to be in constant communiction and figure out what needs to happen in each classroom and not as a whole school. if i was a teacher i would want to send an email out to each of my parents asking about there concerns and if they want me to talk about it or not. possibly even setting up a meeting with them prior to going back to school. I dont think the teacher should bring it up until the kids do. if a parent doesnt want there kid to know about it and other studants start talking about it then i can try sending that particular child out of the class for a few mintes while i talk to the other studants and help them though there questions. As a parent i would love to know that my childs teacher is trying to do everything they can to help but is also puttng our needs and beliefs first.

Oh Colleen. Ill send extra safe vibes over to Ash.

and i think iread it right that they were going to offer counseling if needed, so since they went back on that, i say bring it up and tell them she needs it.
