Mae, she has been up both night in a row asking if the doors are locked.
She tells me she keeps thinking about "the bad man who hurt the children"
She is checking the door locks throughout the day as well.

This was completely unnecessary

I'm so sorry Colleen, I would be livid too. I don't know what the right answer is as to WHO should speak to the child, but I do think that it is your right to decide with the school.

I think it is both. I think the parents are responsible for explaining what happened to them but the school shouldn't just ignore the situation either. There should be counselors brought to help deal with the emotional aftermath.

This is making me very sad. I can only imagine how hard it is for you to see your baby in such distress.
I guess, at this point, all you can do is reassure her that you and daddy are there to protect her. That's my go-to when my kids are scared for any reason.

As far as the school goes...I absolutely think there should be counselor a and the teachers should be available to talk IF the child approaches them. But for them to tell the kids in the first place, no

Then that would be that parents fault. I'm sure either way kids will findout about it. I didn't have to worry so much about my oldest because he is only 4 and doesn't understand anything about death or bad guys that hurt people. I've been on the fence wondering if without telling him details if I should explain to him if a bad person were to go in his classroom to do what his teacher says and to hide. But then I don't want him scared thinking there's a bad guy that's going to his class.

I would have done the same thing you did and been just as angry with the school. Ash is now having to deal with something that she might otherwise not have had to.

If it's any consolation (which I know it isn't), the older kids may have eventually (if not by now) told the younger ones about it and who knows how bad the story they relayed could have been.

I think the tipping point, for me personally, was in speaking to the Superintendant of schools as well as the mayor's aide, all they could offer to me as a parent was "I am sorry you feel that way"

Thats equivelant to a big old IDGAF.

This is not over.

You'd think they would have better communicated what they were going to say (or not say) to the kids.

Agreed.

And do you know what else?
After talking to these beaurocratic smurftards and explaining that my child is having a hard time with this NOONE OFFERED COUNSELING FOR MY CHILD.

SMFH

They talk the talk, but it's not sincere.

My son's school sent us home like 10 letters. But they want the parents to talk about it, and they are not talking about it. Even with the kids around and they gave us the letters they said " to give you information about what happened last week"

It's my responsibility to inform my child of the situation. He knows very little of what happened but he saw me crying on the couch when I was watching the news and all I told him ( I dont want him to be afraid of school) was that some horrible evil man made a bunch of babies and grown ups go to sleep forever. and he understood and hugged me and said it's okay mom, I'm still here.
