how to get rid of an over supply?

posted 18th Dec
is it even possible?

I bottle feed my son. He gets breastmilk during the day, formula before bed since it fills him up more. I've had my milk in for a week. I would only pump 3 times a day at first, but now I feel like my boobs are filling up faster every day and I'm way too busy to sit and pump every hour in order to not have big sore boobs..

Ok, than just let them dry up.

OR sorry to say you will have to sit there every hour on the dot, if not every half hour and pump your life away.

It will self regulate, the less you pump the less you will make. Just be aware that you will likely lose more than you'd like.

oh man. looks like i'll be building some kind of stand to hold this pump up then. my arm is getting tired!

i'm having to the pour the milk out right now since i'm on antibiotics that you shouldn't take and breastfeed a child under a month old.

You need a new Dr. There is NO case where you "have to " take an antibiotic that isn't okay for baby since there are a TON of choices in antibiotics.

As far as oversupply - if you are only having to pump 3 x a day you most definitely don't have oversupply & will be drying up soon your own. It takes pumping 8-10 times daily (or nursing) to establish supply & maintain it. So it will down regulate very soon if you are only removing milk several times a day. Are you pumping at all during the night?

When you leave milk in your breasts it has special amino acids that are reabsorbed & they are suppressor peptides, they naturally down regulate your milk. It really is something that auto corrects. It isn't instant though. Having some soreness with engorgement is a normal part of early post partum whether you nurse or don't because your milk comes in & then goes down....not for every momma - but for most.

Well, I told them that I was breastfeeding and assuming they would give me something I could take. I took the first dose and then read that you shouldn't breastfeed and take the medicine, so I've just been pouring it out until I can get my doctor to prescribe something else.

And I was only pumping 3 times a day at first when I became engorged, now it's much, much more. I pump at 10 pm and then usually again around 4-5 am, depending on when K wakes up.

It's usually around every 2 hours that I pump. Sometimes sooner if I feel like I need to.
