Best of luck to you. I have a friend who homeschools her son with autism, and I know that it can sometimes be very overwhelming on her - but she wouldn't trade it for anything.

Hello

I just wanted to give some support for your investigation on education.
I too was VERY leary of schooling my child at home but my husband was very interested in the idea.
I got my feet wet with my child at the age of 3 turning 4 by joining a co op called Classical Conversations. CC is nationwide and growing.
I did this for 2 years for fun and then decided to take it seriously when my child started Kindy and now first grade.
The advantage to CC is that the subjects are taught with all ages. You and the certified tutor at the co op dive deeper into the info as the age increases.
Classical education follows the trivium which is a 3 part learning style in children; grammer, dialect and rhetoric. This is a classical model on how the brain develops intellectually.
I would not have been able to accomplish all that I have without my network of homeschooling moms. ASK lots of questions!! There are so many mothers and fathers that would love to help.
The pros for educating my child at home in her most foundational years is that I am the one setting the standards, morally and academically, and can correct any behaviors immediately I see unfit. I also am recieving a whole other kind of education with my child and love the time spent! I will never regret this.
There are many schedules and unschedules to follow.. Simply do what works for your family. Flexibility is a great thing when it comes to HS.. Plus the extra family time we get with field trips and only needing to spend 4 hours of academics gives us SO much time to just enjoy each other and understand one another by heartfelt talks that are unrushed and in the moment.
There are many extra activities to get them involved in and yes they count as education hours. HS is not what is used to be... BECAREFUL of getting so overwlemed with curriculum.. Get a hold of a few moms that will give suggestions with curriculum so that you do not waste money..
If you have any questions.. ask

I'm the preschool tutor at CC in our town! We're uncertain if we'll continue with it, I just can't decide. But we sure do love our CC family right now, they are amazing.

How wonderful... Some people find it to be a lot but I use CC as my core and not my supplement. I then add my grammer and math so I feel it is just right for our family. It gives me a great schedule to follow and allows my child to have a set schedule with subjects with the same peers all year long

THANK YOU! definitely very helpful. I will look in to CC.

we're doing a VERY loose "curicullum" for the next 26 weeks with the alphabet….trying to get more of a schedule in place, and focusing in specific topics in our weekly interactions. So we'll see how we do with that. This week is "A is for Alphabet"

Most definitely! If I was going to use it as the core it would be different. We'll be using Heart Of Dakota next year. I'm really excited for it. I'm still uncertain when it comes to what math we'll use. We're using 100 easy lessons right now to teach our daughter to read though.

Sassy Chef...

I used 100 easy lessons when my child was 4 turning 5 and she was not ready to blend any sounds...
We revisted it and I have heard great things with it.. It's a bit dry but thats okay. The door just seemed to open up with Spell to Write and Read.. I like it because it uses ALL the senses and teaches several subjects and what time.

Icat...

I really enjoyed 5 in a row curriculum when I started getting me feet wet with preschoolers.

My fathers World, Sonlight, Abeka are all wonderful curriculums..

Enjoy!

We almost went with MFW for next year, until I fell in love with HOD.

So far, K is doing really well with 100 easy lessons....we'll see if it keeps up!

And we're using Before 5 in a row at CC in the PreCC room!

I've never heard of HOD... Not that I have heard of everything ;)

It is very similar to MFW, I thought, only a few differences that I felt would work best for our family. I really struggled between the two, but I'm really in love with Heart Of Dakota, so I'm excited. I still haven't selected a math for us next year, but I'm sure I'll get it figured out.

ok, now im so baffled. I didn't realize there were so many types of curriculum out there!

Do you guys have links to the various curriculums…? I'd love a "pre preschool/preschool" aimed curriculum that I might be able to start early with…just to test it out…

any ideas? are there websites for each of the different curriculums…? do you have to register? do you buy equipment/curriculum through the different sites…?

I'm so confused now! a little more overwhelmed again

HS is not what is used to be and has SO many (maybe too many ;) options now a days. I say once you've schooled for a few years and find what you like then beware to any HS sales and such.. It sucks you in to buying more than you need! Stick with what works!

All of these curriculums do have websites and I do not believe you need to register. Most curriculums need to be bought, yes.
However I believe with 5 in a row it's simply checking books out at the library and relating several subjects to the one read out loud book. You can go at your own pace. They also have something called "before 5 in a row" for preschoolers. Google it and you will find the site. I did the 5 in a row for a book or two and LOVED it but then got hooked up with Classical Conversations and stuck with that coop and curriculum.

It is easy to be overwlemed but you are not alone. I was too 4 years ago!

maroon and grace life, do you have an opinion on Calvert or Timberdoodle?

I have looked at both of those curriculums as well as HoD, MFW (which I really liked), Sonlight and A Beka.

I feel like their are concepts from all of the curriculum that I have looked at and would love to incorporate different aspects from each, but still would like a basic plan to follow. Thoughts?? I'm a total noob, but hoping to HS my 5 year old who would be starting Kindergarten this fall.

I liked what I saw from TimberDoodle, not the direction I want to take but I've heard good things. I heard it was a lot of fun, and very complete.

We are using HOD. I was torn between it and MFW. I ordered their catalogs and compared them side by side, and HOD won for our family. We'll be using Horizons for math, and we're currently doing 100 Easy Lessons for reading so we'll continue with it (if she hasn't started reading already.) If she's already reading, we'll use their emerging readers guide.

Yes, I like looking at TimberDoodle just for ideas

Thank you for the suggest of HOD. I took a look at it again last night and really really liked it, I think we will do that and supplement with a math and reading program as well.

My LO is really into science and I want to make sure we explore it a lot. I found mixed reviews of the included science text: the world God made. Just issues with how it is set up and out of date photos. Have you seen that book? I'm thinking of finding a different book for science
