Teaching kids to read *help*

posted 17th Dec
My 4 year old wants to try to read but he is driving me insane. He will sound out the word, then say a completely different word. For example if I show him the word "Cat" he will say, "C-A-T...Corbin!" Or "C-A-T...Pan!"

Is this normal? Just a sign he's not ready to start reading yet? Is he trying to make me crazy? Lol

I was able to read a little bit but was having a lot of trouble in first grade. My mom worked with me intensely and forced me to learn to read using Hooked on Phonics.
Could that work?

Start with what sounds the letters make. Try and find this movie. Its really cute and it helps teach the sounds

To me I would think it is a sign they weren't ready. Just focus on the sound the letters makes for awhile.

Normal at first. My 10 yr old does this, but she is MID so its very normal for her, its the place where her delay is.

But my 4 yr old reads at a grade 1-2 level and has for sometime now, but when we started out with reading she was willing to learn and practiced all the time. But I know a lot of lo's who did that as well.

Try labels around the house. Table/window/fridge get lo going on some sight words etc...things he see's every day kwim? Once you can get that in, it should make things easier.

We love that movie! He knows what all the letters say and he can sound out the sounds in the words..he just can't connect the sounds that the letters make with the whole word...I don't know how to explain it!

Totally normal. lol Start by reading books that interest him. Our daughter loves Mercer Mayer books, Pinkalicious & Pete the Cat! She started with sight words between 3-4yo...and is now actually reading at 5yo. She is sounding out words, understanding silent e's and letter pairs...etc. She could probably sound out any word, but we try to keep the content relevant so she actually understands and enjoys what she's reading.

I get it. lol My 10 yr old is the same exact way. She will sound out like D-O-G and say dentist. When she spells words she leave out all the letters that are of most use the VOWELS. She just cant grasp how to read, she has been working with proffesionals for yrs to help her and she just cant do it.

I had it for my 11 year old when he was little, and now I cant find it anywhere!

Does he know how to write the letters and stuff? Start with simple words and just have him sound out each letter and then putting them together to make the word. Some kids have a harder time learning to read than others. One day it will click with him though.

Oh no, I hope they both get it soon. I know Corbin has a while before he's expected to read, I was just trying to help him because he wants to learn...guess we'll just keep working on those letter sounds.
