re: Is your job scary?

posted 17th Dec
I've had jobs where other people were afraid for me, but literally the ONLY time I ever was afraid at work was the day I got robbed. Even after it I wasn't afraid to go back. It was a bank & he had hold of me from behind & had a knife to my neck. I seriously didn't really think he was going to kill me though. NOW that I have kids, I think I would see that very differently.

Another "scary" job I had I traveled all over across several states, always alone being a sales rep that went to industrial areas of cities - so it was into the worst neighborhoods, because no one puts a manutfacturing plant in the suburbs, right? So yah - the traffic scared me more than the neighborhoods though. I had a few close calls in traffic around Chicago that made me cry after the fact. That is a terrible city to drive through.

What could happen to my kids scares me far worse than what could happen to me. Somehow I tend to think of myself as "able to handle it"....not sure if that is good or bad that I think that way about it.

It can be scary. Mind you I'm behind bullet proof glass up front, and the back is key locked but there's always the possibility of violence. I work in the welfare office and people can get very upset when they don't get what they want.

At times, yes. I work at a gas station/convenience store... and for the most part, I love the customers. It's a small town, so it's not awful. BUT. I do get my fair share of people who get pissed off when I ask for their ID and they don't have it... and they start cussing and making a damn scene.

One thing I am happy for.. I'm off December 21st. I was terrified that I'd have to work... and the lunatics would come in thinking the world was going to end, and rob the place or hurt people.

Also... we're mostly known for ice cream. We have about 30 flavors on dip side, make shakes and all that jazz. So it's a lot of families that come in, versus just adults and what not.

I work with adults and children with special needs, and some have severe anger issues. Sometimes I'm scared I'll be bodily injured, but I'm never worried about dying, no.

I teach 5th grade... I've never feared for my life before Friday. I always thought I was "safe" in an elementary school. I mean, who kills kids rights? I would be lying if I said I am not dreading school in the morning. I mean it is nearly 3am and I'm already awake because I'm so nervous. I have to talk to my class about what happened, and practice a lockdown drill. What the hell am I going to say to comfort them? Assure them it'll never happen to them?

Yes my job is quite scary and stressful, I work with adults with learning disabilities and mental health problems and a lot of the time they are not in control of themselves. Daily you are at risk and you always have to be aware of what is going on around you. I've been physically assaulted I can't even count how many times which include having my head smashed against a car door, being held against a wall by the throat whilst the person attempted to stab me in the neck with keys, etc. I've had co workers who have been attacked whilst driving the car, who have been burned with people holding hot pots on them, had televisions thrown at them, some have also been sexually assaulted. Just at the weekend I had to run away from someone who tried to assault me and lock myself in one the safe rooms and call the police because they were trying to kick the door down. You've got to be fast in my work!!

In itself, it is not scary.

However, I have had a few incidents where I thought a resident might be angry enough to do something extreme.

I work as PCA at a hospital. I fear big smurf bombs left by my wonderful patients and catching some nasty illness. Other than that, it is relatively low key.

Could be "weirdos" in there already. Locally an office worker shot up his co-workers a few years ago.

No, i work at an investment firm, and we rarely get any visitors here.

My husband on the other hand is a claims adjustor for an insurance company and has to go to people's houses... that is scary for me. I always fear that someone will do something crazy especially bc he is African American and works in a predominantly white area...one in which they arent very accepting of blacks. Same goes for when he was a police officer
