My 4 year old will not stop whining

posted 15th Dec
Hi Ladies,

I'm at the end of my rope with my son. He's 4, and the only thing that comes out of his mouth is complaints and whining. He cries over everything, and I mean everything. I've been patient, I've been understanding, I keep sentences short with him. And still, he cries over every thing. I get it, our family was recently ripped apart due to his smurf father no longer "being happy" anymore. I'm getting exhausted from doing this alone all of the time.

He sounds like a typical 4 year old boy. I know its tough and can be extremely frustrating, and it doesn't help that you're also going through a divorce/break-up, but you just have to be patient, and this phase will pass. In the mean time, turn on spongebob in another room and have him send some time in there and get some time for yourself. Have your [parents watch him for a night, and have a nice stress free night to break up the stress of single-mommyhood.

Oh I only I lived near family or real friends. The only break I get is my one day off during the week and he's in daycare. 3 was horrible too.

Maybe see if you can pick up an extra day at work and put him in school another day so you have some adult time and time to give your brain and patience a break.

My son was such a breeze until 3. As soon as he could talk he has wanted to test his attitude, and do typical 4 year old things like back talk, not listen, complain, whine. They don't understand the hard work that goes into what we do for them, and it's a hard lesson to learn as a parent not to apply adult logic to a toddler's world, in an effort not to get frustrated.

I promise it gets better.

I work almost 60 hours a week as it is!

I just hope it gets better, it needs to get better.

Oh my gosh! i wish I could say something to make you feel better, but for what it's worth, it WILL get better with time.

I feel bad for your little guy and I know it is wearing on you, Think Baby. But, really, I'm wondering if it's possibly more than typical 4 yr old behavior. I am not a counselor by any means..but I am a mom of older kids and I can say ..yes kids whine, yes kids cry...but not to the degree your post suggests. It's certainly a possibility that he is responding to the recent change in your home. Have you talked to his pediatrician about it? I hope you can get some answers and peace...soon.
