What exactly is the difference with a DSLR? My dad keeps saying I should get one, but I don't know what it is or if it's better?

DSLR = digital single-lens reflex camera. Basically, the Coolpix and other that compete with it are pocket cameras and DSLRs and the kinds that require a case.
BOTH have features that are fully automatic.
I just changed from a coolpix to an Olympus hybrid - not a pocket-type and almost a DSLR.
I like it as the quality is excellent and it can do soooo much.
The downside of the pocket ones is the speed. They take sooooo long to take the picture! i had it from when my LO was born until 3 1/2 and i cant tell you how many pics i missed b/c of the damn camera;'s lag.
DSLRs and almost-DSLRs are MUCH better for that... but you cant slip them in your pocket.

Ok, I may look into a DSLR then, even if it is a bit more money. Part of what frustrates me about our camera now is how long it takes to snap a pic - I would rather have to carry it in the diaper bag and actually capture the picture than have something slightly more portable and miss out again. I'll have to take a lot of it into consideration price wise. I was hoping to replace my SO's laptop for school AND our camera for less than 1K at tax time.

I have the Olympus PEN PL3 and I really like it.
Go to CNET, type in the above product and use that as a launching point to research the one thatbyounthinkis best for you. You can certainly do it for less than $1k.

I too have a canon powershot. I got it two years ago for Christmas, and I love it. I don't use it very often, but it takes GREAT pictures. It is in fact durable as someone else said. And I too have taken it to raves and it survived lol.
It also has really cool features like fish eye and color targeting. I think it's pretty quick, but don't remember exactly how quickly it takes pictures as I haven't used it in a while due to having an iPhone, and it doesn't really seem useful to carry around a digital camera as well as my phone. I'm sure once DD is born I'll carry it in the diaper bag, though.
I think my ex may have payed around $415 for it, though.
I also have a film canon rebel, so I was really pleased with this camera comparing the pictures it took to the quality that my rebel took.

yes the cannons are durable mine has even been down the toilet, i thought it was going to camera heaven that day but no its still kicking
