re: Wanting to have a baby at 18?

posted 15th Dec
I agree with a earlier post try living together for a while before trying for a baby. Babies are hard work. I wish u the best.

The best advice I could give you is to wait. I wanted a baby for as long I could remember, too, but I'm glad I decided to wait. DD was planned, very wanted, and was born when we were in a good place (we had both finished our undergrad, we had decent jobs and a house, and had been together 5.5 years/married for 2). Despite this, parenthood is unimagineably hard. Honestly, I sometimes wish we had waited and I was almost 25 when she was born. Our circumstances have changed a bit and I am back in school as an undergrad again. College was much, much easier without a child. I am so grateful that I had almost six years to live on my own without a child. It was time I needed to grow as a person and time that DH and I needed to build our relationship.

I know at 18 you think you have things figured out, but I guarantee that your world will change so much in the next few years. At least spend a year living on your own before making the huge commitment to parent. Get an education, build a life with your SO, and make your life as stable as possible. Once your child is here, they are yours for the rest of your life and are your direct responsibility for at least 18. Please make this choice carefully.

I mean are we talking about teen moms that end up single at any time, even if their kid is 18, or is there a 'he'll have left by the time the kid is ___' figure?

You don't need to feel like you're missing out on anything but a lot of people do. Living in a dorm, not at home with a toddler or two, becoming close with your roommate, the college experience in general, dropping everything and to drive to another town for a show or something. These aren't things you can just do with a kid. A lot of people feel sad that they missed out on it.

Either way - you won't be doing it with a baby! Especially if your breastfeeding! Why would you purposely put yourself and your child in a smurffy financial situation and risk your future like that? Incredibly irresponsible.

Travel with or without your child? I'm talking dirty, sexy backpacking through South America with almost no money in your wallet just going where the wind takes you.
Not very kid friendly

What does the drinking age have to do with anything?

If you are referring to that for partying, plenty of people here in the US still party and go out under 21.

Ohh I see what you're saying. Well in my situation, I was single 2-3 months into my pregnancy. I find that a lot of times if the two people remain a couple until after the baby is born, they end up leaving before the baby is 1. You and your child are very lucky to have their daddy though! I think if he has been there this long and is working hard to support you guys you've got you a keeper ;)

Wasn't meaning I would drink when I'm pregnant or breastfeeding, I just thought everyone pointing that out should know.
