I'm not sure how you tried to "rig" one but I use to always just put a small saucepan into a larger sauce pan that had water in it and let the water boil then added the candy melts in the small saucepan. Also there are directions on the package on how to melt it and if you read it fully you should be able to melt is successfully. Sometime you need to add a little shortening to the candy as well.
