Breastfeeding question!

posted 14th Dec
I have decided to pump my breastmilk and feed it to my son, along with formula. I was just going to let my milk dry up, but my son was born premature at 4 pounds and 15 ounces so I figure he needs all the help he can get! I feed him a couple of ounces a day, usually at night before bed.

How much should I be pumping and storing in a day?

I usually pump once my boobs become really hard and tender and they start leaking. Usually in the morning and half way through the day. How many ounces should I pump out at a time, to keep a good flow of milk?

To keep a good supply you should just nurse your LO.

I would say pump every 3 hours for 10-15 minutes. Get as much milk as you can. Here soon the engorgement will resolve and you won't be able to pump nearly as much.

Well this is more of a pumping question than a breastfeeding question. But you should be pumping every two hours to keep your flow up. Nurse him if he'll latch. And you should TRY to be getting at least 1-2 ounces every time because that's about what beebz should be eating this early.

I have to do this with my son. Pump every other time you feed him and it will keep the supply up without keeping it TOO up (needing to pump every hour etc, happened to me...yikes) Just make sure you empty each breast fully before you finish!

if you want to keep a good milk flow you should be pumping every three hours, every person is different but when i breast fed i would fill one of the breast milk storage and freezer bags in one pumping, that was also between feedings... and you should pump until the milk stops pumping... if you wait to pump when you get engorged and leaky your milk will dry up quickly. its takes alot of time and commitment but it is very worth it for your little one, and also benefits you. it releases hormones that soothe your nerves and make you calm as well as helping your uterus shrink back faster, and helps you lose baby weight faster. good luck!

I would pump every 3-4 hours for 15 mins. You can get freezer bags and freeze the excess for later feedings. (If there is excess)

Yep just pump every 2-3 hours for at least 20 minutes on each side. Then once you get the Ok you can put him to breast. Good luck!

Thanks, ladies! I can probably look it up, but I'll ask here anyway. How long does breastmilk last in the freezer?

6 months. Keep it in the back, so it's not exposed to air every time you open the door.

I always kept mine for 6 months in a deep freezer but no longer. and in the fridge for no longer than 5 days and room temp for about 2 hours... but that is just me. other people may have done it differently.

My son was born premature too, only he was 8lbs 4oz, but I am pumping for him too since he won't latch. I saw a lactation specialist and she said pump every 2 hours and then take a 6 hour break at night. I pump 100ml my first 2 pumps in the morning (little over 3 oz) and then around 70ml every 2 hours after that. I was told for storage 4-6 hrs room temp, 1 week in the fridge, and 1 month in the freezer.
