WORKING IN NYC?

Hi


I'm on my last year of high school and next year I'm going to university. I live in Portugal and I'll be attending, probably, the best university in the country to study Communication Sciences/Journalism. I'll then be having an erasmus course probably in Columbia, NY or London university.

My dream is moving to NYC in the future, in about 7 years, and be: photographer, photo journalist, writer, photo journalist, documentarist, reporter, etc. Yes, I will be able to do everything because my courses will have all that.

I want you all to be honest with me (it's not going to affect me, because I'll try anyway). So.. How do you think it's in NYC for these kind of jobs? Obviously it's difficult everywhere right now, in the world's current situation.. BUT what's your opinion?

If not, what are other areas nearby that have better chances? I do not worry doing other things (being a bartender, or whatever.. As long as I'm being paid). I just love the city too much, and would love to give it a shot. If not there, I'd be moving to somewhere else in the states, where things are easier.

NEED help and helpful advice, please! ;)

NYC is a great, easy place to live in........if you don't have kids and you have a lot of money saved up before you make the move. It's pretty easy to get a job here, but if you're picky about your living situation don't come here lol.

Oh you do live in NY? that's fabulous. I will be saving a lot (will be working for a year here, and saving everything to take..). I could seriously live anywhere (but bronx, lol) well, I still could try it.. lmao. But as long as I have a bed and a lil kitchnet and bathroom, it's fine with me. I mean.. I can adapt to every little place. I was a scout my whole life. Places to sleep are not the problem  

the problem is I'll be with a VISA. do they discriminate people there at workplaces because of that? :/

They are very tolerant of immigrants as long as you speak English....but it's best if you become a permanent resident because then you can work legally, get on assistance if you need it, ect.

I am a straight A student in english and will for sure get some kind of superior degree/course in it, later on. I already have international exams proving my levels. I just pray I'll make it there. Problem is - the US makes it very hard for us to get a VISA.. that's what people say. Unless I marry an american citizen or get a job, right there.. Because if I go 6 months without a job, they'll deport me back to my home country :/

I lived in manhattan for about 13 years. It's awesome.
As previously said, you will have to be tolerant of really lousy living conditions. For instance, most of my friends lived in 1 bedroom apartments with 2 or 3 people during their early 20s.
It is very difficult to make a living in the arts, so having good waitressing skills will help.
I think it's great that you want to live in NY. Save as much money as you can!

Ugh! Immigrants on assistance. Please don't.

If you go to school here, I think it works in your favor. I'm not positive on that though.

If she's a permanent resident and NEEDS it to survive while she's busting her ass at work and school to have a career and better life, I don't see a problem.

IMO, if you come here, being self-sufficient is mandatory. We have enough trouble paying for our own citizens.

I agree with that, but hard times fall on everyone whatever their situation is. If she loses her job, she should not have to drop out of school and go back to her country. But jobs are pretty easy to come by here so if she's willing to work, chances are she won't need assistance.

thank you. I believe immigrants and citizens of the own country should be treated equaly, as long as they're honest hard-workers.

so, if i moved to your country because i thought it was really cool but i couldnt support myself, i should be entitled to live off of the earning of the citizens your country?

I sort of agree with that, but I also think it's very important to realize how expensive it is to live in the city (although some of those costs can be ofset if you do not have a vehicle, etc.)

Make sure you look at what typical rents are in NYC, OP, and do research. See if you can find someone to room with, make a few different budgets. I have a few friends who do very well bartending, and a few others who work some very strange jobs to make ends meet. If you don't have a vehicle, rents are cheaper in some parts of Brooklyn, I wouldn't recommend Queens (aside from maybe Astoria area) without a car because there aren't as many subway lines in Queens as in Brooklyn.

What type of journalism? NYC is great, but the hard hitting reporters and journalists are in DC. There's nothing better for a communications major than White House press credentials.
