Exactly. It's just people freaking out because the world is supposed to end...

It is idiotic to say that you (general you) won't let your kids go to public school for fear of school shootings. I guess movie theatres, malls, parties and everything else is just out of question? Stupid.

Smurf happens. That's life.

Exactly, it's like saying I am not going to let my children play outside because they could be hit by lightning.

By that logic, all you need is proof that it has happened. An Amish family in PA lost a 9 month pregnant mom and baby to lightning when a pop up storm happened when they were berry picking.

Very good point! I am not homeschooling. I would go insane   How many homes get broken into and people get murdered?

No, this kind of thing can happen anywhere. No matter where you live at.

We already homeschool... but not for safety reasons.

Things like this can happen ANYWHERE. Being schooled at home doesn't automatically make us "safe".

I am not cut-out to provide a comprehensive education for my child. I will send her to school.

Me neither. I don't plan on being a SAHM for the rest of my life either.

There is danger everywhere. The only way to keep them as safe as possible is to never let them leave the house, and I refuse to deprive my kid of a happy life over a "what if."

Why one or the other? Should be both IMO.

Mine are homeschooled and always have been. Partly for safety, but mostly for quality of education and in the interest of making the curriculum and method suit the child, not trying to force the child to fit into the curriculum.

I don't think people should panic-pull their kids, but I do think it warrants long-term examination on all families' parts as to whether or not kids are safe at public schools. Not just from mass shootings, but from predator teachers, other classmates, fights, and of course being tortured by bullies to the point of suicide. And not only whether their physical bodies are at risk, but their minds and emotional lives, their educational futures, their family relationships, and their overall health as well.

No one in their right mind can claim any more that these are just "isolated incidents." This is an ongoing problem and one that will not be solved with more laws, more vigilance, or more safety measures at schools. It's cultural and it must be solved culturally.

Until it is addressed and solved on a cultural level, everyone has a decision to make on whether or not they want to offer their children up to the schools, knowing that they are the most frequent targets of mass shootings and that it CAN happen anywhere. It sounds callous, but I don't think anyone can legitimately say, "I didn't think this could happen." How many more times does it have to happen before you stop thinking your child and their school are exempt!?

Yes, tragedies can happen anywhere. But most homes are not targets for rampage shooters, unless it is the home of their family members. Unless you have some real lunatics in your family, your home is safer than a school by a longshot.

No there's no point since we've never had a school shooting here and I can't actually imagine one any time in the future. Also what am I going to do home school them the whole way through high school (since the majority of violence and bullying happens through high school)? And what about college are you going t force them to do online college at home? And how are you going to make them work from home when they want to be a nurse, doctor, or something?

Loads of homeschoolers go to college and have just as wide a variety of adult professions as non-homeschoolers.
