Voluntary Induction?

posted 13th Dec
I'm considering asking my OB to induce me at my appointment tomorrow. If I were to be induced, I'd want to on Monday or whenever they can.

I've looked into the risks and concerns, but I promise there is a valid reason for it. And I might say why if enough people ask but for now, it's kind of my thing.

But has anyone had a voluntary induction? What was your experience like? I know induction sucks ass. Or like...how long were they giving you pitocin before you delivered?

I was induced at 37&4. It sucked. I was in labor for 31 hours. Pitocin for 18 hours.

So.. why?

My induction ended with an emergency c-section.

I mean, if for medical purposes then your OB would probably talk with you about that. I had to be induced for medical reasons (which are no different than voluntary, except I didn't want to be induced), and had to have an emergency c-section..If not for medical purposes, I would just wait. You don't have very long! ^_^
There is no harm in asking, but I'm sure the answer will be no.

Same here.

Except mine was a medical reason (well, supposedly. low fluid levels). & after my due date.

Still ended in a c-section

My induction would only be 3 days before my due date, so I'm thinking it should go fast. Maybe. I hope. I'm not sure, as I've no experience in inductions.

The reasoning behind it might seem stupid. My family does Christmas Eve as their Christmas celebration almost 3 hours away and my great-great grandmother is very old and incredibly ill. To the point they're saying she'll be lucky to make it to Easter.

If I get induced on the 17th, it means he'll be a week old by Christmas Eve, and so (hopefully, God willing there aren't any complications) he'll be able to travel the distance to see her. I know I could wait for another time to visit her but Christmas has always been a big deal.

I feel kind of bad for the reasoning now that I've typed it.. :/

Why do you want to be induced?

For the holidays? lol

With some doctors these days it is possible.

I started pitocin at about 5pm, I was already in labor. So I should have refused it, there were no decels in HR though my contractions were irregular they were still working. I began pushing at 11:45pm and she wasnt out until 3:07 am. My pelvic bones didn't have time to shift enough so she got hung up on my pelvis and now has a life long bald spot from it.

I would do some research on inductions if I were you. Of course sometimes they go perfectly well, but your chances of a c-section do go up if you are induced before your due date & if you have had little to no progress beforehand.

I wouldn't personally do one for that reason.

Kind of for the holidays. To make sure my great-great grandmother can meet my son, and Christmas is the only time of year she doesn't hate everything and everyone. So it seems like the right time to do it.

I had pre-e. Well, mild pre-e.   Looking back, I should have just asked to be put on bed rest, I really think I would have been okay.

OP, a newborn really shouldn't be out and about anyway. I think it's a bad idea traveling with one. I get you want your grandma to see him, and it's Christmas and all, but don't jeopardize his health over it.

I've done research, but research can only do so much. Half of the research says it's a breeze, the other half says it's the worst feeling in the world. There seems to be no middle ground.

I'd never forgive myself if she didn't get to meet her great-great-great grandson.

It should speak for itself, IMO. That isn't good enough to be voluntarily induced. Your baby is also affected by the drugs & the stress placed on your uterus.

She can meet your baby when they choose to come. If it's that important, you will find a way.
