C section, pain meds and breastfeeding

posted 13th Dec
Im looking at a c section due to a breech baby. My first son was a vaginal but induced early for medical reasons. I was given by the staff pain meds even after I told themi was breastfeeding. Long story short we had to stay longer due to jaundice and they ended up saying I couldn't breastfed nor given him my pumped milk while on the pain meds, it was making him breath slow. He never latched on and I have tremendous guilt that I only pumped for 2 weeks before PPD took over and gave up. I am determined to bf this guy. But already feel like I have a strike against me with having a c section. So any advice or experience having a c section and being successful bf would really help me out.

I had a csection and was on percocet and motrin. They never said anything about me not being able to nurse.

I had a c section. They gave me vicodin, I guess it was safe but once I left the hospital I stopped taking them. I bf and it made us so sleepy.

They gave me hydrocodien (sp) and Tylenol. I still wonder why they gave it to me when they knew I was nursing,

have they tried to turn your LO that could always be an option so you could go natural again I just heard it hurts a lot they can do it a couple ways some have you rock back and forth on all fours, others turn them around manually from the outside others manually turn them with their hand from the inside.

to be fair, perc's can cause respiratory depression when taken in excess, but I have never heard it happening to an infant via breastmilk.

yup. and I took percs every 4 hours, on the dot. and Chub was in the NICU for breathing problems. I'd think that if they were reall;y bad, her NICU doctor would have said something to me.

I had a c section, to be honest I'm not 100% sure what pain meds they gave me but they told me it was safe to nurse while taking them. I was able to nurse for 26 months. Good luck to you.

I was on high dose oxycodone and other stuff due to other injuries plus my c section and they said it was safe to breastfeed. I nursed until he stopped, he prefered the bottle and I didn't like how sleepy nursing made him from the meds. However I nursed until he refused to take it anymore I don't know if it was because of the meds or not.

Noone in that practice will even try it. I've asked. I've tried several options and noting works. He has been breech since 20 weeks. I'm now almost 38 and I have low fluid so turning really isn't an option since my fluid is low. I am still praying and talking to him everyday asking him to turn. I'm not happy about the thought of a c section and being in the hospital at Christmas recovering and away from my son.

It was the nicu doctors who said for me not to feed him my bm. I stopped the pain meds but they made me pump and dump.

Now that you mention is, Luke was in the NICU and part of the reason was breathing.

It was a very reputable hospital, I don't see them not advising me of the risk either.

that's so odd to me. IDK I guess different doctors have different thoughts/feelings on the subject. Her NICU doc was super stoked that I wanted to nurse. lol.
