They aren't the same thing.

You can have sole physical custody and shared access.

If you have sole custody then the childs permanent residence is with you but may or may not have visitation with other parent. If you have joint then the time is split equally.

Im assuming shared access means he is awarded visitation?

Yes, and it'll be less than 50% if you have sole custody.

You can have joint physical custody as well as joint legal custody(they are NOT the same thing), or one party can have sole physical custody while having joint legal custody with the other parent. With my older two, I have sole physical and legal custody(but that's only a technicality at this point since I am back together with their dad), but have joint physical and legal custody of my youngest daughter.

Depends on where you live. Here in IL a father cannot sign over his rights unless he is signing them over to the mothers spouse. Or the court can strip them if they find the father physical or mentally abusive to the child.

i know here the rights have to be signed over to the other parents SO who the other parent has been married to for over a year and he has to be willing to adopt.. also just because he sign his rights over he still might be stuck paying child support
