Really? I know they had put out shirts about the whole Oreo fiasco and what not... I thought they were pretty pro-gay rights? I dont like any busineses that are anti-gay..... Bunch of closed minded smurfs. I still refuse to go to Chik fil A.

I'm a HUGE Costco fan. I'm there about once a week. The income of their average customer is $80k/yr. They have a COMPLETELY different business model than walmart. Walmart has MUCH thinner margins than Costco and they go for volume as evidenced by the fact that they have many more stores.

I'm no wondering what the pay difference is between Costco and Sams, since they are essentially the same thing.... and I wonder what the median income is for the customers there... hmmm.

Of course... the income thing may be flawed, as many business owners use those stores more than the average citizen.

Quoting Tarynosaurus Rex:" Because the facts state it's better for business and the economy. When you have employees who are paid ... [snip!] ... groceries they are much less likely to need government assistance. That means less taxpayer money going to welfare programs."

So, if you have no skills and no job, get a job at Walmart, be outstanding in every way and keep applying to Coscto until you get the job.... assuming there is a Coscto around as they only locate where people have a lot of money to spend.

Target openly discriminates against gay employees. And they have been known to donate to anti-gay politicians. They have tried to cover up their homophobic antics by issuing apologies and coming out with advertising that promotes gay rights, but they still are not a good company when it comes to equality. Really the only reason they changed their position was because celebrities were pulling their product from the store and they were losing money.
And I refuse to go to Chik Fil A. I will not support any organization that gives money to anti gay groups.

It's not as simple as that.

It is though... that's how life works. I started out as a server and also worked as at Ben & Jerry's (both at once) , and have worked my way up through getting a college degree and now make decent money. One cannot expect to be handed a job and great pay for their first job. I agree that minimum wage should match living expenses, but there has to be a line between skilled and unskilled jobs.

You're assuming that Wal-Mart hires anybody and everybody for one. That's not true. You're also assuming that people who work at Wal-Mart do so because they are unskilled. The job market sucks right now. My bf graduated from college 8 months ago and just now found a job in his field...in a different state.

I didn't assume they only hire unskilled. They are an employment option for people with no skills. They shouldn't hire anybody and everybody. They need standards.

Yes, the market sucks right now but in general, people work their way up. Nearly everyone has had their share of crappy jobs that they had to endure in order to get to the next level.

I'm glad your bf had the commitment to getting a job so much that he moved. That says a lot about him.

I'm not saying pay them 100k/yr or anything, but at the very least they need to be paid enough to survive on, and minimum wage is simply not enough.

He hasn't moved yet. Actually he graduated from the University of Alabama in May/June and moved to Houston because his field is in high demand here. But he hasn't had any success and so he got offered a job back home in Alabama, so we're moving in a month or two. It's going to suck living in the south. But also not everyone is able to move for a job. Moving is expensive and most places don't pay you in advance to help pay for moving expenses.

We barely make enough to survive either. And we make decent money.

For me growing up in poverty I just can't see how someone who makes like 100k/yr is unable to survive. That would have been considered wealthy to me.
Unless you live in like California or somewhere where the cost of living is insane.
