No, not for any reason. I have seen the worst behavior possible short of psychopathic violence in 10+ years as a foster parent, and still have never raised my hand to a child. There is no excuse.

My kids know that they get thier warning, then things start getting taken away (instant things - like hit your brother and your game is done), if the behavior continues, it's time in thier room. Still being bad? Smack on the butt and instantly they get that they've pushed to far and mommy IS NOT backing down.

I can say this much, I'm 34, things are WAY different now then how we were raised. Kids get away with to much and are entirely to spoiled (in general, and of course, speaking of my area because that's who I see). The court system needs to get tougher on young offenders, and I think many of them get that way because the parents are way to lax.

When I was a kid, we respected everyone older than us, even if it was by a few years, because they were older and that's just what you did, treated them with respect.

By the time I was in highschool, grade 1 kids at the elementary school that I cut through the playground of to walk home were calling all of us walking through "smurfers" and "smurf heads". The first kid (he was 5, in my cousin's class) to call me that, I promptly went right up to him and informed him that if I EVER heard him say anything again he would be dealing with me, the school and his parents. If that didn't fix it, then he would just be dealing with ME.

Never had another issue with any of them. Was he afraid? I hope so! And I also hope I taught him that not everyone was going to roll over and take it like his parents did. (he's one of 3 kids, and the only one that hasn't done time, his parents have quite the name around here)

People have been saying this for thousands of years. If every generation was really as horrible as the conservative sector of the older generation has always claimed they are, we would have gone extinct as a species a long time ago.

Things are no different from when you were young. You're just crabbier. There were rude people when you were young, and when your parents were young, and when their ancient ancestors were young. It is not more prevalent, crime is not more of a problem (in fact, it's significantly less in all highly developed countries), and {plug in your ideal era} was not a magical wonderland that has fallen.

Things ARE NOT like they used to be. People are so much more materialistic and self absorbed. Personal communication has fallen away to staring at phones and texting (so essentially talking) while other people are trying to talk. That's just disrespectful and has become common place. To say that society (and the kids in it) isn't becoming more materialistic and that things are no different, that it's simply me that's changed, is just absurd.

The "youth of today"... 2800 years ago.

There have always been kids that are unhappy with what they have. There's also a whole generation of ADULTS who are unhappy with what they have. They're called the baby boomers, and their excessive indulgence and "Jonesing" has left all subsequent living generations with the burden of caring for them, since they blew all their money away in their lifetime on material attainment and didn't bother saving for retirement.

Your speech and ideas are the same ones every other generation has had. The generation your parents belonged to was going to DESTROY THE WORLD!!! according to their parents. They were materialistic, "DISRESPECTFUL!!!!!" and out of control too. They wore all the wrong clothes, didn't keep their appearance sharp, and listened to outrageous music... like the Beatles. They protested and rioted in the streets because their morals were decaying and they wanted too much.

Now those "out of control" youth and their children (you) are sitting back saying the exact same thing, believing yourselves every bit as righteous as their parents did.
