Getting your car serviced.

When you take your car in do the tech's/mechanic's always make recommendations to upsell what you're already doing or do the cars really need those things?

I know my car isnt in 100% condition but we take good care of it. I had an oil change today and my wiper blades changed. When it was done the guy recommended I rotate my tires, do a fuel system flush and do my alignment. The price he quoted me wasnt bad I dont think $240 for all of that parts/labor. But I declined at this time, he said that price would be good for 30 days. Do you think my car really needs those things or was he trying to make more money?

How long has it been since you had tires rotated?You need to every 6000 miles, and it should be under $20... and is it driving straight, and your tires are wearing evenly? If so don't bother with the alignment. and depending on your vehicle if you have a plastic gas tank a fuel system flush is a waste, if its metal just use a fuel injector cleaner every few months... its unnecessary to do a flush unless you are having a problem

We always get the alignment, and tires rotated, and every once in awhile a flush. Sometimes an alignment isn't needed (you should know by the way your cat handles) and tires should be rotated every now and then for best up keep. The flush is good for gas mileage. However, We never had to pay more then $100 for all those thinks to be done.

My husband use to work on cars for a living. They tey to up sell you what is recommened for your car.. for how many miles you have on it. Hes not trying to make a buck, hes just doing his job.

I send my bro or my SO to get my car serviced...they always recomend so much to me and I never say no lol

I'm confused, they upsell but they're not trying to make more money?


We bought the car from a dealership about a year ago, certified pre-owned. We've put about 2K miles on in that time. Everywhere I drive is within a 5-10 mile radius so it doesnt add up a lot. It is high miles though, we'll be do for our 90K maintenance in 7K miles.

Your tires are OK if you've only put 2k miles on it. BUT do you know when the tires were last time replaced or aligned?

We had the dealership do it before we picked up the car. They are after market wheels though, not sure if that makes a difference

If you are OK on your alignment and your tires aren't needing replaced, then you're OK at the moment.

I figured but I wanted to get some other opinions just to be sure

Whenever my dealer recommends something, it's because my car really does need it. They have a standard safety measure which goes from green being in the fine zone and red in the danger zone.

I do what needs to be done in the danger zone.

Usually it's for Brakes, tires and battery.
