Paragard and missed period

posted 12th Dec
I've had my paragard for around 3 years, never really had any issues with it except my periods have been heavier since getting it. It never messed with my cycle though. I've been waiting for it to show for the last few days because I was getting a lot of cramping and aching but it never came. I started wondering so I counted up the days and realized I'm about 5-6 days late. The chances of me being pregnant are ridiculously slim, my husband has been in and out of port all month and we've only even seen him a handful of times. We had sex once just a day after my last period ended and didn't even finish because my son woke up and came into our bedroom. I did spot for a few days after but I didn't think much about it since it's not unusual for me to spot if I have sex right after I stop bleeding. I did take a pregnancy test however just because there is that teeny tiny itty bitty chance a rebel sperm decided to start the party early. It was negative though and I can't feel my strings anymore. I'm going to call the Dr Friday if I haven't started by then but I was wondering if anyone else has skipped a period with paragard not due to pregnancy or had their cycle change up out of the blue.

My cycles did change but not by that much. Instead of the regular 28 day cycle, I have a 32 day cycle.

My cycle is a little longer... but besides that not much has changed. I'd take a test just to make sure... I've heard horror stories of ectopic pregnancies with paragard

Did it happen gradually or suddenly? I'm 99.9% sure it isn't a pregnancy but I don't get why after 3 years it decided to go haywire on me.

Oh I took one today after realizing how overdue it really was. It was negative though and I have another to take tomorrow morning just in case. I'm calling the Dr on Friday if nothing changes.

Very suddenly and recent. I've had it for a little over a year and about 3 cycles ago, the length changed.

Well good! I'm glad it happened to someone else too, it's very reassuring. I might still call just to have them check on my missing strings but I'm not as freaked out by the sudden cycle change now.

It can happen anytime... birth control or no.

But the chances are much higher of having an ectopic pregnancy, if you do get pregnant, when you have an IUD in.

Yeah I read about it but it said though the risks of an ectopic are higher among IUD users the % is still lower than the overall ectopic rate. So really it's a rare complication even in IUD users. I'm not dismissing it as a possibility but the chances are really slim.

TMI here but I was reading online about cervix position so I checked mine. It was exactly what they said a cervix should feel like during a period, assuming what I felt was actually my cervix, lol. I really think my uterus decided to go renegade on me because I cuddled a baby the other day, my hormones went all baby mushy and then firmly told my uterus no. So now she's smurfing with me out of spite. That's my theory and I'm sticking with it!! LOL

My periods stopped altogether while I had my paragard. It wasn't because of the paragard though.

General rule of thumb, is that if you can't feel the strings, to call the doctor.

That's just what the doctor told me when I went in to have it put in... that he had seen several ectopic pregnancies with IUDs and to be very mindful of my cycle and that it was properly in place
