I got salt pork instead of ham this time, I was thinking about making fresh steamed green beans with it... but I dunno if that sounds that good together. lol

I just made this (for the second time) yesterday. It is delicious! I'm pretty good at winging recipes, but I'm new to soups. lol. So I follow recipes. I used dry beans instead of canned ones.

I've only ever used dried beans. lol. I think canned beans get too mushy and taste weird. I love heart soups, next weds is cabbage soup or potato soup haven't decided yet!

They are both fairly simple...
cabbage soup
just brown some smoked sausage then add chicken stock then add diced potatos then add cabbage then add cream to thicken it then grated swiss when it's almost done.
potato soup
just dice up onions and potato's just barely cover them with water add some milk and little heavy cream let that sit for awhile then mix up two cups of flour and two eggs and drop them things (i forget what my mom called them) in, you'll know when they are done they rise and bulk up a little but are still supposed to be doughy, then let it simmer for awhile then when it's almost done add half a stick of butter let it simmer a little while longer.
sorry these arn't traditional recipe's these are family recipe's that i've just learned over the years of watching...lol. there might be better recipe's online...

They are really good, my favorites as a child. I also loved shepherds pie and tuna casserole with the stale chips crushed and on top. I grew up kinda poor, so did my parents, so these we staples in our house... I thought I had hated them, but now as an adult I realize how much I miss and loved them! and find myself cooking them more and more. DH was an only child and grew up going out to eat and rarely had a home cooked meal. He thought tuna casserole sounded disgusting until I cooked it for him with the stale chips included, lol. He loved it.
