Wait, what?

Okay so my brother and his wife just found out they're having a boy today. I'm super excited. They are naming him entirely after our grandfather, so he's going to be a II. I thought the father was the I, then his son was a II and so on? I'm so confused. It skipped two generations.   My dad and brother are a I and a II. BAH! I don't know.

If there isn't a II, the new baby would be a II. It's like in the British royal family. There can be a Richard I, then a Henry the I, then a Richard the II, and so on.

If there is already a II then he would be a III would he not??

Your brother would be the III would he not?

The son has to be named after the father for it to be II or Jr in other words.

No, my dad and brother are a I and II for a whole other name. My grandfather was the only one with his name and now this baby will have his exact name.

ohh. gotcha.. Then yes I would consider him a II since he is the second with that name.

Generally if there isn't a generation gap, as in son named after father, then it would Jr. If there is a generation gap, it just follows numerical order. So he would be the II, and if say his grandson were to name his kid the same thing but no one else had that name, then that would be the III.

Just goes in order no matter the generation. Like My dad is I, brother is II, nephew is III and if I were somehow stupid enough to do the same name mine would be IV
