Possibility of Tourette's syndrome in a young toddler?

posted 12th Dec
Recently, I'd say about the past two or three months, my now eighteen month old has had semi-frequent shoulder tics. She lifts up the same shoulder about 5 times in a row toward her ear. She doesn't seem bothered by it. It may sound a bit paranoid for my mind to go toward Tourette's syndrome while observing this, but my husband has it. He has mostly grown out of it, but has moderate-severe Tourette's throughout his childhood and adolescence. Does anyone know the likelihood of this being Tourette's syndrome manifesting itself in my eighteen month old? I am kind of afraid to bring it up in front of my husband because it would break his heart as he was constantly ridiculed by his classmates growing up.

Did your child have any other symptoms of epilepsy?

TS symptoms (tics) etc can show up very young. But diagnosis's generally come in the grade school years. Though keep in mind that those with TS in their family are more likely to have tics in general. So, even if your child has tics, the tics may never develop into full blown TS. That said, even if she ultimately qualifies for a diagnosis, it may be so mild that it's barely notable. And even moderate TS generally waxes and wanes, giving a break now and again. ... I have a child with TS, and my motto has become if it doesn't bother her, it doesn't bother me. I think that's how we have to view it? I hope that your child will not develop Tourette Syndrome, but if she does hopefully she has a good role model in her Dad. ... Best of luck.

nope.. we found out after 4 years of being told " she will grow out of it"
that in fact it was getting worse, anyway..that she had a chromosomal abnormality which is "most likey" the reason for her epilepsy. Her seizures when from arms twitching, to just staring off with a little eyebrow titching.

well.. she has been delayed too, the only thing she did on time was smile. Lol. but she sat up, and craweled and walked pretty late, and even now at 4 years old she is developmentally still 2-3 years. My 2.5 year old has better vocabulary and motor skills and balance and stuff.
