Should I SWITCH?

posted 12th Dec
My OB doc that is.
I really like her but when I went in yesterday for my appt. I had a few questions for her.
One was her thoughts about delayed cord clamping, she says "well if it were THAT improtant we would do it to every baby" and it's really not going to make a difference. I don' tknow that much about it yet (still doing research) but was thinking about doing it. She made me feel like it was silly..

Second, I REALLY want to do skin to skin when the baby comes out and she made it seem like if I didn't it was not a big deal and won't change the way I bond with my baby. That's great that she thinks that BUT this is something I am SURE I want to do.I know for a fact it has it benifits!
Ugh I really want to see a Midwife but I can't find one that delivers at he hospital I want to deliver at . (delivered both my other boys there and I LOVE the hospital)
What woud you do?

I've been doing research looking for one. I just want one that doesn't make me feel like I'm asking silly questions! I got a "goodie bag" from HER office on my first visit and in it was a book and one article was about the benefits and importance on skin to skin! :/

I've been experiencing the same thing, only not with my OB, but with the L&D nurses! I really want to do both the delayed cord cutting/clamping as well as the immediate skin-to-skin.

I would say that although she made you feel silly for asking, as long as she is a GOOD doctor in general and won't actually STOP you from fulfilling your wishes, then I wouldn't necessarily switch. The only reason I would switch OBs would be if I felt that he/she wouldn't follow my birth plan/wishes or if I felt that he/she would not take proper care of me and baby.

I feel like I really lucked out with my OB. Not only does he respect my "alternative" decisions (such as choosing to not vaccinate, delaying the cord cutting, etc.), but he has an older ultrasound machine right in his office and I get to see my baby at every visit.

I would switch. If she isn't willing to listen to what you have to say when you are pregnant, I doubt she will listen to your ideas in labour or give you choices.

I haven't had an OB, but I loved my midwives. We drove across the city (past a few other hospitals) to get to the one that my midwives have privileges at and it was very much worth it, my birth experiences were amazing, almost exactly how I pictured them (I had planned to give birth at home, but had a home like experience in the hospital).

Thnaks!
She said just let my nurses and delivering doctor know that is what I wanted. So I know she would let it happen. I really like her, I probably won't switch.

My OB's office is in the hospital the I deliver at and I really like that too.

If it's something that I wanted I know she would do it but I could go without the whole "it wouldn't make a difference either way"

I would LOVE to go with a midwife but the best ones around deliver at a hospital that I really don't want to deliver at. It's a good hospital but the location is in a not so nice area (not terrible but not the best) just the type of people go there are very different then the hospital I deliver at.
I wish the cold just deliver at my hospital! Ughh! :/

It's funny that you say this because I feel the same way about MV. The area is just yucky. My best friend had both her kids there and I hated visiting! It's a really nice hospital but I hate driving through such a creepy part of town to get to it. Are you talking about Dr. Guy and his midwives? They are pretty much the only even slightly natural minded practitioners in the area unfortunately.

YES!
I would so go with them but I hate that the only deliver at MV! I love KMC and really do not want to switch hostitals. I was going to ask you who you go to or if you know of any good doctors/midvives.

I had a *good* experience with my OB and hospital (Southview) with both of my kids but it was a very hospital birth-ish situation. I had an induction with Evan and an episiotomy with both and a pretty average, controlled and restricted environment. At the time I was happy with the experiences but knowing what I know now I definitely want a different experience with our next baby. My OB was super nice but I wouldn't recommend him unless you are a fan of unnecessary inductions and tons of interventions haha. My friend that I mentioned before had a really cool, natural-minded OB. His name was Dr. David Dhanraj. She said he isn't at his practice at MVH anymore, I'll try to find out if she knows where he moved. He was a really cool little Indian guy lol and he was really anti-inductions and episiotomies and wasn't super pushy about anything. I know a lot of midwives but they're all home birth midwives.
I really don't know any local CNM's but I've heard pretty good things about the CNM's who work with Dr. Guy.
