Why are so many parents careless with their children?

posted 12th Dec
The thing that impresses me most about America is the way parents obey their children.
Many of my friends seem to spoil their children to no end.
I was at the mall and there was this woman who bought her son an Xbox 360 because he was having a temper tantrum and she didn't seem to know any other way to calm him down.
That's just one example. I could fill up this entire space with other examples, but I highly doubt you want to read all of them.

What I don't really understand is how little American parents seem to care about school and grades.
I know many families who are perfectly satisfied with their children receiving straight D's for the rest of their life.
It feels like the American middle class is generally composed of guilty parents and lazy kids.

We're falling behind in other countries with math and science by an extremely large margin, and no one does anything about it.
In fact, most parents seem to do nothing but make excuses for their kids.
Yes, there are people who succeed without going to college, but those people are rare and few. You actually have to be good at something to be able to succeed without college. Most people aren't exceptional in that way.
Those exceptions aren't an excuse to fail to instill a love of learning in your children. You have so much more opportunity than we ever will in other countries. And you're allowing your children to waste it.

The American education system is designed so every student can pass with at least C's. If your child is failing, it's not because they aren't good at the subject. It's because they aren't trying.

There is no room in the world for selfish needy brats who don't know how to say "please" and "thank you" and people who aren't determined and want everything handed to them. I'm quite tired of seeing so many kids like this. Please don't raise your child this way.

Unfortunately that's what we Americans have become. A nation of deluded materialistic degenerates. Growing up, I didn't get a new video game console everytime a new one came out. I had a SNES until 2-3 years before the Xbox 360 came out. My grandpa got me an original Xbox for Christmas. Then I got my first console, meaning a console I bought with my own money after I joined the Army.

Parents are lazy and too afraid to discipline their children, I got spanked if I misbehaved as a kid. But God forbid you spank a kid these days. If I have kids, that kid misbehaves, he's getting whooped. None of this BS of "throw a tantrum until I get what I want".
The thing is however is that you have to realize that for every self-entitled spoiled brat of a child there are many more who are not.

EDIT: And I would argue about the "We have more chances than other countries". There are countries, the Scandinavian ones most notably, who have a better standard of education than we do. They are paying their teachers to actually teach and not be overworked and over-stressed babysitters and they have a much higher percentage of children who go off to higher learning facilities (colleges and/or trade schools).

So we are FAR from being the best. We've lost that a while ago and we're losing ground fast.

I agree. Welcome to the age of technology. Parents these days arent as active in their childrens lives because both the parents and the children are consumed by technology. Its really important to make your children your #1 priority and to mold them into good human beings before they are let out into the world on their own. The disconnect and lack of morals that some families have from one another is so, so sad to me.
