re: Why are so many parents careless with their children?

And who the hell are you to tell any of us how to raise our children. Our parenting styles are NOT your concern. Your opinion of a bratty child could have very well been just a bad day. you dont live with these children day in and day out. its just from what you see when you happen to see them.
Who the heck says your way of "raising children" is the correct way. If parents want to spoil their children let them be. If you want to bury your kids away in a box go right ahead...i could care less.
Math and Science isn't all that important if you go apesmurf and shoot everyone like virginia tech. Even the smartest kids are capable of doing VERY stupid things. If it came down to it. I would want my child to be caring and a kind person over smart. ANYDAY

Your whole "argument" is based on assumptions...You say a child is failing because hes "not trying" My nephew can try all he wants. he's never going to amount to the same as any of the students in his grade. Why? because he has a learning disability that prevents his brain from thinking the way we do and comprehending the way we do.

Next time try make a point worth making.

She was basically saying that there are a lot of ungrateful brats out there and that the USA is dropping in education statistically. Which is true. Being a good mom is NOT that hard if you arent a lazy smurf. No matter what your situation is, your first priority should always be making sure your children are well rounded people and encourage them to be who they are and support them academically, whether they are naturally intelligent or not.

I judge people who have smurf children because MY children have those children as peers who will influence them in one way or another. I had the worst anxiety all summer that my oldest baby was starting kindergarten and was going to be away from me all day long mon-fri and then when I picked him up the first day of school and he told me "at recess I wanted to play with those boys but one said to me 'why do you keep following us?!'", I cried myself to sleep. He would NEVER speak to another child like that and was dumbfounded when someone treated him like that. He played by himself that day because that little boys parents couldnt take the time to teach him to be compassionate and nice to other children.

i fully agree with you.
like i said. i would rather my son be kind than smart any day if i had to choose. because if its not instilled at an early age empathy can be a very hard thing to teach children later down the road.
my main point is xbox or no xbox...this chick has no idea how that kid is just by that one encounter nor does she know the circumstances in which the whole xbox thing came up. Children can be spoiled all their life and still know what compassion is... I was spoiled growing up but i never forgot to give to those less fortunate and to understand that there are different types of backgrounds of people.

I think she was just using that as an example, obviously she doesn't know 100% what THOSE exact people are like. For people to come into this thread all "who cares. Who are you to judge? Troll troll troll" was really stupid. (not you) If you dont have anything to add, shut the hell up.

Y'know kids can be smurfs because of bi-polar disorder, depression, Borderline personality disorder etc.

Kid who are perfect normally could throw a fit in public. If the mom had waited until then to go drive all the way up to get the xbox that the kid had been so good for, then all the sudden had a fit at the store, going home empty handed after all that effort is rarely worth it. Who is to say they don't get disciplined or corrected later?

Rewarding your childs fit and then disciplining them after the fact is sending them the completely wrong message. No matter how you slice it, that mom should have taken the child out of the store into the privacy of their own car or at least the bathroom and just explained to them that thats not how we act if we want something and if they can behave and ask nicely for things for a week (or whatever) then they can get it.

Well, why don't you just go parent everyone's kids for them? Since you obviously know how to do it best.

Smurf that, I'd let LO throw her tantrum right there on the floor in front of everyone, as long as she's not thrashing around and destroying merchandise. I do not reward tantrums with any kind of attention, aside from laughter.

That's what I do   She can throw her fit. She's a kid. Kids do that. I got smurf to do and I'm not going home just because she won't cooperate.

She's almost 3 and is beginning to understand that I laugh at her. I don't always but when I'm in a good mood I will, because frankly, it's funny. Sometimes when I start laughing now, she quickly shuts the smurf up, gets up and and finds something else to do.

I've had great success with ignoring tantrums or just standing there and watching her but doing nothing else. Last time she did it, it was last week and it was barely for 30 seconds before she got over it.

Meanwhile my roommate's 6 year old is an outrageous smurf and the 1 year old [almost 2] is quickly picking up that attitude. We've been living here since the oldest was 3 years old. They literally get whatever they want until the parents are flat broke, the mom is the worst because she has no backbone whatsoever, she just lets the 6 year old hound her literally all over the house until she caves, even after saying no a dozen times, even screaming it. The dad is at home but not really there, you know?

Sometimes it's so irritating to hear the bullsmurf that I go and tell the kid to shut the smurf up and leave her mom alone for 5 minutes, she already said no and that's final. Sometimes DH is the one that goes off. The only people she obeys without backtalk or needing to be told twice are myself and DH.

For my daughter , something magically happened just before she turned 3.
Things have been so much better since the 2s are over.

Are you worried about the rotten behavior of the 6 yr old on your LO?
