1 day old and feeding issues! :(

posted 11th Dec
My son was born yesterday, at 36 weeks and 5 days. He was 4 pounds and 15 ounces. I've had my son with me in the hospital room since around 10 AM this morning. We've been doing the feedings every 3 hours. And he honestly has no interest in eating. He isn't latching on to the bottle nipples, and when he finally does and actually drinks some....He spews it back out, through his nose and mouth. We switched his formula to something a little gentler, but we haven't noticed a change.

Any tips or tricks on how we can get him to start latching on to the nipple bottles? We've tried switching from the long ones to the shorter, stubby ones. I'm trying to avoid a feeding tube. :/

Can you try nursing him? The nipple is soft and won't choke him.

Do u not want to bf? It'll be much easier on his little tummy. Especially being premature. Sorry mama. That's tough   that's a common issue with preemies. They do have a more diffixult time with sucking.

my son had this issue kinda, we had to switch to a slow flow nipple on the playtex bottles that have the liners. The drop in bottles, it allows for him to actually get it little by little. he's getting too much it sounds like

I would try breastfeeding.

If not you could try pointing the nipple more towards the roof of his mouth while making sure his tongue stays down. I would try feeding him in a side lying position to where you are holding him up but he is laying on his side up against your arm. That will help with it spewing out.

That's what I was thinking. OP, is their a reason you're not trying the breast at all? I would have killed to breastfeed my son...

ya i had ppd to a small degree because my son wouldnt latch, im gonna try full force to get little girl in my belly to breast feed

if he can practice on your nipple it might be a lot easier for him, I was thinking that too. Cause there's not much there right now, he can start slow

This is a very common issue in premie'e. It is hard but try not to stress.

Personally, I would just nurse him. Your nipple is a better "fit" over a synthetic nipple on a bottle. Plus, the skin to skin with the nursing is a great help for the baby. They say that premie babies that are nursed and have skin to skin contact go home sooner and are healthier over all.

If you aren't into nursing, I get it. It is just the easiest way to get him to eat what he needs and help him along so to speak.

I agree with this. Preemies have a real hard time working up the energy to eat as often as they're suppose to.

I actually attempted to BF today and he didn't latch on once. :/

I'm hoping the nurses can work him. They seem to be better at feeding than us.

Have a lactation nurse come in. Sometimes if you express just a little bit on the tip of your nipple, he will latch. Preemies really do struggle to eat. They haven't fully developed that "motion" if you will.

Bring him to your room, make it nice and calm and soft. Try not to stress because he will feel it. Express a little colostrum and bring his little moth to it. Go ahead and rub some on his lips if you can. Just enough for him to taste it. Breast milk is very sweet and babies like that. Be patient with him and let him know it is ok. Don't switch back and forth with formula and breastfeeding. You will give him nipple confusion. Make a decision on how you want to feed your child and stick to it. If you choose to nurse, don't use bottles or formula at all. Give him the time to get used to eating and how he is going to eat.

Good luck!
