My mom said those exact words to me "But you don't do pain" when I told her that I planned to give birth without pain medication.
There are so many other ways to deal with the pain. Hiring a doula is the best thing (I think) if you can still find one that will take you so late
Oh, and stay out of the bed, even if you are on wires, you can move around (unless the baby is not handling certain positions). I only know one person who preferred to be lying down during labour. I found leaning forwards, doing very large hip circles moaning in low tones to be wonderful.
If you can get your hands on the book "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" I really recommend reading it, it made me feel like I could do anything!
