Overwhelmed.):

posted 11th Dec
My little girl isn't taking to any formula so well and I don't know what to do! The NICU started her on enfamil premium newborn and the night we took her home she kept throwing up and not sleeping and seemed really fussy and gassy. We ended up at the NICU at 3am to get Prosobee because the nurse thought maybe she's not taking to the milk based formula. That seemed good for the first day.. But it seemed like it was getting worse the next day. So went to her 3 day check up and I explained to the doctor everything and she then gave me gentle ease for gas and fussiness.. Well last night was the first night and she seems terrible on it. She spit up like 7 times after one feeding and averages about 4 spit ups. I don't know if I should stick with it and give it a chance.. I just don't like seeing her all upset and spitting up that much.): any ideas ladies?! Anything at all.): I feel bad.

My daughter did awful on that enfamil formula too. Switched her to gerber good start gentle and she does great with that....it will take a little for them to get use to a new formula too and spit up is normal..if she is vomiting and seems very unhappy or in pain I wouldnt leave her on it in my opinion.

It takes at least three or four days, sometimes up to a week, for an infant to get used to formula.
My son couldn't handle anything other than Similac for three weeks, then WIC made him switch to Enfamil Gentlease, followed by a couple months later to Enfamil ProSobee.
Give it a little more time. If she isn't used to it by the end of the weekend, call a nurse.
I know it is hard to watch, believe me, I cried every time. But waiting is all you can do, as much as it sucks.

My friend said her daughter did great on that too! When we called the NICU, they asked if daddy or I had problems with formula and SO did. He was like lactose intolerant but even the soy isn't doing well for her it seems. /: doc told me to call her in a week and give baby a week on the gentle ease but if she keeps spitting up this bad and NOT sleeping hardly then I don't want to go that long.);

Yes.): it's so hard. I cry almost every time I hold her and watch her spit up and act like she's hurting and me on no sleep and SO is very frustrated. It's horrible. /:

I was pumping but not getting anything out at all. I'm pretty devastated about that too.

Keep pumping, don't give up. Did the hospital give you a pump? They have the good pumps and can be rented and sometimes covered by insurance. But it takes some time for your milk to come in, don't give up.

Keep doing it and go to your local health food store and ask for mothers milk tea, she's telling you what she needs! Ask your doc for meds to help your production

Ask for reglan to increase your milk supply(it's a medication and works really well). You can also take funagreek and blessed thistle. I would not give up. Preemies benefit the most from breastmilk because their immune systems are extremely weak and it sounds like she isn't taking to it formula anyway.
