Elevated Blood Sugar

posted 11th Dec
I'll be 33 weeks Tomorrow. I had a regular prenatal appt Yesterday, and the doctor told me that when I had my blood sugar test (feels like) a million years ago, it came back at 146 "with the 'cut off' being 140." So now I'm monitoring my blood sugar 4 times a day for a week. I'm pretty frustrated. My husband and I don't eat out and dont eat anything packaged. We cook lunch and supper from scratch (I mean dried beans that you soak and boil, and making our own sauces). I've also been concentrating on eating a ton of veggies and fruit all day and practically eliminating all sugar and processed carbs. I cook with reduced fat butter and milk, and really watch sugar and salt. I work out on my elliptical 4-7 times a week for 10-30 minutes. I've been doing this since I got pregnant. So, I'm really frustrated. Am I missing something? I have diabetes in my family (G-ma, g-pa, father, aunts, etc from both sides). Could that make my risk increase now despite all that I'm doing? I wanted this pregnancy to be as healthy as I could manage and I am really discouraged now. I checked my blood sugar when I woke up this morning, and it was 90 when the paper said it should be BELOW 90. Any one have any advice or any ideas why this is happening?

To give more info, for breakfast I do whole grain cereal or oatmeal, then have bananas and apples as snacks throughout the day.

When I had gestational diabetes they said to stay away from carbs. If I wanted to eat some then make sure its whole wheat. Corn, potatoes & i think bananas were a no no too

Fruit actually has a lot of sugar in it. That can make your blood glucose rise. I was monitored too fom 26 weeks on. Im not sure about everything with gestational diabetes but it is different than normal diabetes. Even though you have a higher risk for getting diabetes if you have gestational. So as far as I know all you can really do is what your doing. I know it's annoying.

Try cutting back on the fruit some. Fruit has a high glycemic index and will cause blood sugar spikes.

I'm trying to remember, and the morning I took the test I downed a huge thing of coffee with sugar and cream in it on top of cereal and possibly an apple. Then for lunch I had a bean burrito that I made and took the test about an hour and a half after. The doctor's office didnt say anything about what not to eat other than "Don't eat pancakes with syrup," so I told them about my coffee and they all said that was fine, but I wondered if all that contributed. just tested my blood again after some oatmeal and after an hour it was 100 with it supposed to be less that 140, so that's good. I am trying not to stress out about this.

I was eating fruit twice a day as snacks between meals. Either two apples, or an apple and a banana. When I was morning sick, I ate my weight in strawberries because it was the only thing I could keep down. Now I only have one apple OR banana a day--a few hours after breakfast, and I cut out juice. Would just one fruit a day cause this?

No, probably not. But I just re-read your post...I don't know why it says your blood sugar should be below 90; that's actually pretty low. Generally the healthy range for blood sugar is considered between 80-120.

The below 90 is for right when I first wake up. I have to write that number under "fasting" that I guess is supposed to be used as a control. I'm new to all of this so I'm really clueless.

Gotcha. It doesn't sound all that bad to me...I would try not to stress about it, as that can also raise your blood sugar

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water as well...at least 8-10 glasses a day. That will help keep your blood sugar down.
