Percocet & breastfeeding.

posted 11th Dec
I was hospitalized yesterday for a very nasty bladder infection that almost made its way to my kidney's. I was also so sick that one of the lymph nodes in my breast got swollen (didn't even know you could have lymph nodes in your breast) & I've also had this awful, awful migraine headache for the last week that comes and goes multiple times a day. The doctor said it might be some hormones left over from my pregnancy & the fact that I'm breastfeeding. They aren't too sure though. More follow up's will be needed. Regardless, they prescribed me Percocet for the pain. I've been breastfeeding my LO since birth & she is very, very attached to my breasts. I usually can't put her to bed without nursing. She gets fussy if she doesn't get her boob, she comfort feeds etc. I'm concerned about me breastfeeding. Is it time to just wean her? I'd hate to do that. I love nursing her but I'm concerned for her health while taking percocet's. I asked the doctor if it was okay to nurse her while on them & he said he wouldn't really recommend it. But then he told me, "We'll honestly, it just makes them sleepy & a little drowsy. It's not a big deal." So I'm just very confused. I have heard of some mothers nursing while on Percocet & many said it that they're doctors said it was okay. I keep getting mixed answers. I was trying to just take Tylenol for the pain but the acetaminophen does absolute nothing for the pain. My migraines are awful, awful, awful. What should I do? Continue to breastfeed? Wean? ?????!!!! My daughter is 10 months, 28 inches long & 15 pounds BTW. So she's a little a munchkin.

I'm guessing there is more to this and probably a question about if percocet is ok with breastfeeding - the answer is yes it is

Moms take it after delivery... both vaginal and section all the time.

You didn't finish the post but yes. Percoset is safe while breastfeeding. I was offered it after I had my baby.

I'm on my phone & I pushed the wrong button that's why i didnt finish my post. I had to repost. I had asked my doctor if it was okay to nurse her & he said he wouldn't recommend it but then he said, "Honestly? It just makes them a little sleepy & tired. It's not a big deal." I was getting mixed answers from him so I was just very confused.

very few docs know anything about breastfeeding.

it's fine... every c-section patient we have takes it... and many of them breast feed. I fed mine without a problem. newborns are sleepy anyway.

OP very little if any transfers into the milk. I took percocet and siezure meds (Make babies very sleepy potentially) and there was no effect on my daughter

I feel like many docs don't know very much about a lot of things these days & you get a lot of mixed answers from a lot of them. Just last week I took my LO to her check up appointment & her pediatrician said she had an ear infection. She was prescribed antibiotics & after taking them for a day & a half she was vomiting. Had to take her to the E.R. & the E.R. doctor there said he didn't see any ear infection & he wasn't too sure why he had said she had an ear infection when nothing was wrong. It's just annoying.

Do you think it's still safe even though my LO is a small baby? She's 10 months now & only weighs 15 pounds. She's 28 inches now. Her pediatrician said her percentile growth is low for her age. She said her height is fine but her weight & head growth is low. Someone mentioned some Mom's being prescribed percocet's even if they have newborn's. So I'm guessing its safe?

if it's safe for a 5 pound newborn it's more then safe for a 10 month old that has more mature organs to metabolize the meds if it transfers. Seriously stop stressing, it's not that big of a deal

yes... moms.. take percocet... when their babies are........... 5 minutes old. I'm sure if that's ok.. then you're 10 month old will be fine.
