Choking 9 day old... HELP!

posted 10th Dec
So, my little guy is 9 days old. This started about... 4 days ago. When he would breastfeed he would sometimes choke, like he's eating to fast... which I guess is normal. But now, today, he's choked twice AFTER his feedings. Like an hour after his feeding and when we were driving... it scares me so bad... and his eyes get all watery... ugh, help please!

Thanks!

Is there another sign for reflux to help narrow it down...?

LO did this. He would inhale sharply too and get hiccups all the time. Reflux! His doctor prescribed 1ml of Maalox max. Twice a day. Works like magic!

choking while he's laying down, crying and tensing up after a feeding. Trouble sleeping, unexplained crying. All babies have a certain amount of reflux when they're born because their muscles are still developing. That's why all (or at least most) babies spit up and toddlers don't spit up. Reflux is just spit up that doesn't come all the way out. Sometimes it can go into their lungs and cause issues, but that doesn't normally happen unless it's extreme. You can limit reflux by making sure you burp the baby real good and keep him sitting upright as long as possible. Laying them flat will only cause what's in their stomach to flow upwards.

Sometimes it can be a symptom of some sort of food sensitivity, but again .. unless it's an extreme issue, it's probably just something they'll grow out of. They also sell gripe water and if it's real bad, you can talk to the dr and get a prescription for baby antacid.

my baby was also breastfed an did the same thing.. the hospital told me he was mucsy from swallowing the fluilds when he came out. but he also was diagnosed with acid reflux. but please do research before putting your baby on meds for acid reflux. look at the side effects. the one that the dr put my baby on had lots of scary side effects.

Burp him. I took him right to the doctor immediately and got him on the Maalox within the hour. So, I'm not sure what else to tell you. Why are you circumcising 2 weeks later?

Yeah my baby has reflux but the dr. won't put her on any medicines because of possible side effects as long as she is gaining weight. she is breastfed and has all the symptoms. her dr. says she will probably outgrow it.

Just the way it happened. My dr wanted to make sure he was gaining weight before he traumatized him. He said it wasn't much of a rush... so IDK.

oh... The longer you wait the worse it is. If they do it right after birth, baby barely notices and its healed in a couple days. After a couple days, let alone weeks, the risk increases and it becomes a more serious event. Just making sure you knew...

... great. ;( thats upsetting. But it needs to be done, so I hope it's not bad for him. I stayed at the hospital for 4 days and they don't do them at the hospital... ;( ugh.

Don't let that upset you, my son was almost 6 weeks when he was circumcised and he healed perfectly fine. Just relax and take care of him when it's done.

They said Maalox?? They gave LO actual reflux medicine and it's not helping at all!! I've started to thicken his bottles with oatmeal but that's not helping now... His spit up doesn't smell like spit up, it smells like vomit. And it also doesn't hurt him to lay down on his back. Also if he falls asleep after he eats and spits up when he wakes up its chunky (when it's just formula with no oatmeal). Is that still reflux?

Sorry OP not ignoring you but I do agree that it sounds like reflux from what I've been told from my dr and my friend's dr

Thickening his bottles can be dangerous. It's a huge choking hazard. I would talk to your dr about switching meds around. I've also never heard of giving babies maalox. It's normally zantac (prescription from dr by weight of baby) and another one that I can't think of the name of right now.
